Wild Things sign former WVU outfielder Barry
The Wild Things have had plenty of success with former West Virginia University position players and they hope that trend continues this season as they announced Monday the signing of outfielder Braden Barry.
The 24-year-old Barry is a former WVU player who spent the past three seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system.
At WVU, Barry was a teammate of former Wild Things outfielder Caleb McNeely, who won the Frontier League’s Most Valuable Player award in 2024.
Barry played three seasons with the Mountaineers, his last in 2023, when he batted .290 with 19 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 24 stolen bases. He was drafted by Toronto in the eighth round in 2023.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Barry spent most of his time in the Blue Jays system playing at the Class A level, though he did have a three-game stint with Class AAA Buffalo in 2024 and went 3-for-11 at the plate for the Bisons.
Washington will begin its 24th Frontier League season May 7 at Windy City. The Wild Things will play their first seven games – one at Windy City, three at Joliet and three at Evansville – on the road before the home opener May 15 against Schaumburg.
There was one change made to the original schedule that was released this winter. The game scheduled for May 14 at Evansville has been moved to May 13 and will be part of a doubleheader against the Otters. This will give Washington an off day before the home opener.
