M.J. Maruschak gave Canon-McMillan its second dominant pitching performance in as many days and the Big Macs remained undefeated with a 4-1 win at Norwin on Thursday in Class 6A Section 2.

One day after Sebastian Shulsky struck out 16 batters in a win over Norwin, Maruschak fired a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts and only one walk as the Big Macks improved to 5-0 in the section and 10-0 overall.

Canon-McMillan scored three runs in the top of the first inning and that was more than enough offense for Maruschak. Massimo Falconi led off the game with a single, stole second base, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a groundout to give the Big Macs a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Brayden Radue belted a two-run homer to right field.

Norwin (3-2, 5-3) scored its run in the third inning, but Canon-McMillan pushed across an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Radue.

Norwin pitcher Caden Sivrich struck out 10 and did not issue a walk.

The third game in the series is scheduled for today.

Washington 8, Waynesburg 4: Joe Wilson hit a three-run double in the top of the first inning, and Caleb Patton added three RBI, powering Washington to an 8-4 victory over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 4 game played at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.

The teams split their two-game series.

Patton drove in a pair of runs in the Prexies’ three-run fourth that gave them a 7-1 lead. Wash High (3-3, 5-4) hit three triples. Tristan Coney and Will Callan hit the other three-baggers.

Two Wash High pitchers combined on a eight-hitter. Coney allowed one earned run over four innings. Patton finished with three shutout frames.

Grant Pack had three hits for Waynesburg. Jarrett Tretink and Kory Taylor doubled.

Toronto 7, Burgettstown 5: A bases-loaded walk and an ensuing wild pitch enabled Toronto (Ohio) to score two runs and break a tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading to a 7-5 win over Burgettstown.

Burgettstown (3-4) had scored two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. The Blue Devils were limited to three hits. Matthew Bredel drew two walks and scored a pair of runs.

Upper St. Clair 11, Trinity 1: Evan Smirniw drove in three runs and had two hits to help Upper St. Clair dispatch Trinity 11-1 in five innings in Class 5A Section 3.

Ayvari Chandler had an RBI single in the top of the first to give Trinity (2-4, 3-7) a 1-0 lead, but the Panthers (2-2, 4-3) tied it in the bottom half and scored three runs in the second to take the lead. They finished the game by scoring five times in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Bentworth 9: Chartiers-Houston broke a 5-5 tie by scoring six times in the sixth inning to beat Bentworth 11-9 in Class 2A Section 1.

Parker Riggle hit a tiebreaking single in C-H’s big inning and Josh Hawkins added a two-run double. Hawkins went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Riggle also had three hits.

C-H (4-2, 5-4) used six pitchers. Brady Gotfredson was the winner with 1.1 innings of relief.

Charleroi 6, McGuffey 4: Charleroi built an early lead and held on late to beat McGuffey 6-4 in a Class 3A Section 4 game at EQT Park.

The Cougars (3-3, 3-3) scored three times in the third inning, which was highlighted by a two-run single from Tristyn Woods, and added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.

The Highlanders (1-3, 2-7) made it interesting in the seventh, scoring two runs on a Wyatt Hildreth double, but he was thrown out trying to advance to third for the final out of the game.

Chartiers-Houston 12, Bentworth 6: Chartiers-Houston scored eight runs over its final two innings to pull away and beat Bentworth 12-6 in a Class 2A Section 1 game Wednesday night at EQT Park.

Josh Hawkins had two hits for C-H, a double and single, that drove in five runs. Aaron Walsh had a double and scored two runs.

Four Chartiers-Houston pitchers combined on a seven-hitter. Brady Robaugh worked the first four innings and allowed only one run.

Josh Hancock had three hits, including a double, for Bentworth. Ben Hays also doubled.
