High School Roundup: Bentworth stays unbeaten with McDonald’s walk-off single
Zoie McDonald hit a walk-off single that scored Mikayla Gonglik and Bentworth remained unbeaten with a 4-3 win over Frazier in a Class 2A Section 4 softball game Monday afternoon.
McDonald’s single came after Frazier (2-4, 4-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Sydney Gonglik, an LSU recruit, struck out 14 and allowed three runs, two earned, in a complete game in the circle for Bentworth (4-0, 9-0). Mikayala Gonglik singled twice and drove in a pair of runs.
South Fayette 4, Chartiers Valley 3: A sacrifice fly by Evie Vuono in the top of the 11th inning proved to plate the winning run as South Fayette outlasted Chartiers Valley, 4-3, in a Class 5A Section 3 game.
The game was tied at 2-2 after 10 innings. South Fayette (4-3, 5-6) took the lead on an error by Chartiers Valley (1-6, 1-7) before Vuono’s sacrifice fly.
Juliet Dziki had an RBI single for the Lions that tied the game in the sixth inning. Emma Earley had 12 strikeouts over eight innings in a no-decision and Makenna Galish pitched the final three innings with three strikeouts to earn the win.
McGuffey 5, Charleroi 3: Nicole Klages and Miley Main had an RBI single apiece as part of a three-run top of the seventh as McGuffey (4-1, 4-2) rallied for a 5-3 win over Charleroi in Class 3A Section 3.
The rally came after Charleroi (2-3, 3-5) plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, one on a triple by Lyla Brunner.
Main was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts.
West Greene 18, Beth-Center 2: West Greene (5-1, 8-3) belted 13 hits, including a double and triple by Kylee Davis in an 18-2 win in four innings over Beth-Center (2-4, 3-6) in Class A Section 2.
Davis, Caitlin Whyte and Kendra Tharp had three RBI apiece. Katie Brudnock tripled and Whyte doubled. Bella Stepp had a two-run double for the Bulldogs.
Jefferson-Morgan 15, Avella 1: Kallyn Novak and Braelynn Bayles had a two-run single and Kesley Vessels produced an RBI double in an eight-run sixth inning for Jefferson-Morgan on its way to a 15-1 win over Avella in Class A Section 2.
Gabriella Marmie, Vessels and Bayles doubled for the Rockets (5-1, 8-2) and Emilee Bazzoli struck out 15 over six innings pitched to earn the win. Paisley Downey tripled for Avella (0-3, 0-6).
Belle Vernon 22, Ringgold 4: Belle Vernon (4-5, 6-6) belted 22 hits, including a 4-for-4 performance by Kaylee Sypolt in a 22-4 win in six innings over Ringgold (0-7, 0-8) in Class 4A Section 2.
Sypolt finished a homer shy of the cycle. Mailey Hayes drove in four runs and had three hits, including a double. Emily Bird also had three hits for the Leopards.
Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0: Bailey Barnyak struck out all nine batters she faced and hit a three-run homer to propel Carmichaels (4-1, 6-3) to a 15-0 win in three innings over Mapletown (0-7, 0-10) in Class A Section 2. Lily Sisler added an inside-the-park grand slam for the Mikes, who finished the game by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the third.]
Washington 18, California 2: Sophie McCort doubled three times and drove in three runs and Tateionna Warren singled, doubled and had four RBI in a 18-2 win for Wash High (4-1, 7-2) over California (0-6, 0-9) in a Class 2A Section 4.
Chessa Henderson, Jakirah Howell and Gabby Cornell had two-hit games for the Prexies
Gabriella Luncinski and Olivia Lemkey drove in a run apiece for California.
Monessen 17, Ellis School 2: Monessen (2-3, 2-6) plated a dozen runs in the second inning on its way to a 17-2 win over Ellis School (0-2, 0-3) in three innings in Class A Section 3.
Bry’Aunna Cook had a two-run double in the inning and Monessen drew four bases-loaded walks and five hit-by-pitches that resulted in runs in the frame.
Burgettstown 4, Fort Cherry 2: Andi Miller went 3-for-4 to help Burgettstown (5-1, 6-3) score a 4-2 win over Fort Cherry in a Class 2A Section 3 contest.
Emma McGregor, Madelina Guiddy and Raya Sentipal had an RBI each for the Blue Devils. Taylor Farner had two hits for Fort Cherry (0-6, 0-6).
Brownsville 3, Waynesburg 1: Ava Clark fanned 14 batters as Brownsville won a pitcher’s duel, 3-1, over Waynesburg in Class 2A Section 4.
Gina Tedrow yielded only one earned run and two hits with eight strikeouts, but took the loss for Waynesburg (2-3, 5-5).
Lyla Gill doubled for the Falcons (4-2, 6-3). Ellie Makel had a double for the Raiders.
Norwin 5, Canon-McMillan 4: Emma Gibson hit an RBI single for the go-ahead run to lead Norwin to a 5-4 win over Canon-McMillan in a Class 6A game. Maddy Kessler homered for the Knights (5-1, 5-3).
Addyson Smith drove in three runs for the Big Macs (4-4, 5-4) and Sophie Carl singled twice.
Thomas Jefferson 3, Trinity 2: Madden Stanek and Zoie DeCostro had an RBI apiece to help Thomas Jefferson slip past Trinity 3-2 in Class 5A Section 4.
DeCostro doubled for the Jaguars (7-1, 8-2) and Aubrey Shaffer pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to earn the win. Nina Christy, Emma Starr and Madelyn Hall had one hit apiece for the Hillers (4-3, 9-3).
Baseball
Waynesburg 4, Seton LaSalle 2: CJ Corwin pitched a complete game three-hitter with three strikeouts to help Waynesburg (3-2, 3-7) secure a 4-2 win over Seton LaSalle (6-1, 7-2) in Class 3A Section 4.
Kory Taylor, Jaxon Parker and Grant Pack recorded an RBI apiece for the Raiders and Austin Surber went 3-for-3 with a trio of singles.
Avella 6, Jeannette 4: Bryce Wright struck out six over five innings pitched and Avella earned a 6-4 win over Jeannette (1-4, 5-5) in Class A Section 1. Tristan Davis, Luca Davis, Brayden Fuller, Cam Ullom, Jordan Moore and Noah Kimberland drove in a run each for the Eagles (6-1, 9-2). Fuller pitched the final two innings to earn a save.
California 10, Bentworth 6: Kaden Weston had three hits, including a triple and drove in a pair of runs for Cal in a 10-6 win over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1. Logan Hartley added a pair of hits and RBI for the Trojans (5-0, 7-2) and Weston Monticelli picked up the win with five strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Sam Wade and Cameron Krejci had three hits apiece for the Bearcats (1-6, 2-6).
Mapletown 6, Monessen 5: Cameryn Shaffer hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning to give Mapletown (1-9) a 6-5 win over Monessen (0-9) in a nonsection game.
Carson Vanata tripled, singled, walked twice, scored two runs and struck out 10 in 5.2 innings pitched for the Maples. Christian Scherer doubled for the Greyhounds.
Jefferson-Morgan 8, West Greene 4: Jefferson-Morgan jumped out to a 6-run lead after three innings and went on to score an 8-4 win against Class A Section 1 rival West Greene.
Winning pitcher John Woodward had a pair of RBI singles and drove in three runs for the Rockets (3-4, 4-7) and Tyler McVay went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI. West Greene (2-3, 2-9) scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Belle Vernon 9, Elizabeth Forward 3: Belle Vernon plated eight runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 9-3 win over Elizabeth Forward (4-1, 6-4) in Class 4A Section 2. Nate Kostelnik had the big hit in the frame, a bases-clearing double. Chase Petrosky and Jack Edwards added an RBI single each. Ian Porter pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to earn the win for the Leopards (6-1, 8-2).
Keystone Oaks 3, Charleroi 2: Nate Rohe scored the winning run, by beating out a throw to home plate and Keystone Oaks rallied to defeat Charleroi 3-2 in eight innings in Class 3A Section 4.
Charleroi (3-4, 3-5) led 2-1 after plating a run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the eighth inning. Shane Falcone doubled in a run for Keystone Oaks (2-3, 4-5) to tie it at 2-2.
Jake Corrin was a hard-luck loser, allowing only one earned run over 7.1 innings. Corrin had five strikeouts.
Mt. Lebanon 12, Canon-McMillan 5: Mt. Lebanon (2-2, 7-3) knocked Canon-McMillan (6-1, 11-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 12-5 win in Class 6A Section 2 action. The Blue Devils put the game away with a five-run sixth inning after jumping out to an early 5-0 lead on Canon-McMillan starter Sebastian Shulsky.
Massimo Falconi doubled and tripled for the Big Macs.
Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Carmichaels 2: Tyler Samide pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts and hit a grand slam to propel Greensburg Central Catholic (5-0, 5-0) to a 10-2 win over Carmichaels (4-3, 5-5) in a Class A Section 1 game.
Ryder Krieg and Brayden Andres had an RBI apiece for the Mikes.
Burgettstown 5, Beth-Center 1: Matt Bredel struck out 11 in a complete game two-hitter and Burgettstown defeated Beth-Center, 5-1, in a Class 2A Section 1 game.
Bryce Speer went 3-for-3 for the Blue Devils (2-3, 4-5) and Brady Neal singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Jacob Nopwaskey hit an RBI single for the lone run for Beth-Center (0-7, 0-8).
South Fayette 17, Upper St. Clair 6: South Fayette scored seven runs in the top of the first on its way to a 17-6 win over Class 5A Section 2 rival Upper St. Clair (2-3, 4-4) in six innings.
Cody Bungert had three hits and drove in four runs for the Lions (5-2, 8-4). Bungert had a two-run double in the sixth, an RBI triple in the third and plated a run with a single in the fifth.
Evan Mizia had a bases-clearing double in the first and Luca Gioia contributed a two-run double.
Trinity 12, Penn-Trafford 11: Trinity (4-7) erased an early five-run deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth in a 12-11 victory over Penn-Trafford (7-4) in a nonsection thriller.
Derek Falvo had three hits and drove in four runs for the Hillers, who overcame a second inning grand slam by Penn-Trafford’s Tanner DeStefano.
Falvo had a two-run single in the five-run sixth. Landon Crowe got the win in relief and Leo Carder recorded the final two outs to record a save.
McGuffey 6, Brownsville 2: McGuffey scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning on its way to a 6-2 win over Brownsville (2-5, 2-6) in Class 3A Section 4.
Sam Stout had a two-run single in the second. Wyatt Hildreth picked up the win for the Highlanders (2-3, 3-7). He pitched 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Jeremiah McDonald doubled twice for the Falcons.
