High School Baseball: Maruschak’s gem leads Canon-McMillan to victory
M.J. Maruschak pitched a complete game four-hit shutout with four strikeouts as Canon-McMillan salvaged a game of its Class 6A Section 2 baseball series with Hempfield, scoring a 6-0 win Thursday.
The Spartans (4-5, 7-9) took the first two games of the series on Monday and Tuesday.
Maruschak also doubled and drove in two runs. The Big Macs belted 10 hits, five of which were doubles.
Alex Eslep, Brayden Radue, Dominic Patragas and Cayden Laskosky all hit one double for the Big Macs and Blake Simmons singled in a pair of runs.
The Big Macs (8-4, 12-4) are finished with section play and will have to wait until results from other games next week to see where they finish.
Charleroi 15, Monessen 0: Logan Henderson went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles as Charleroi (5-7) cruised to a 15-0 win over Monessen (0-15) in four innings in nonsection play.
The Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to invoke the mercy rule. Logan Usher allowed one hit and struck out four over four innings to get the win.
Colton Shawley had the lone hit for the Greyhounds.
Chartiers-Houston 19, Sto-Rox 0: Chartiers-Houston (8-6) plated 15 runs in the first inning of a 19-0 pounding of Sto-Rox (0-11) in three innings in a nonsection game.
Josh Hawkins had three hits, including an RBI triple and a two-run single during the 15-run first inning outburst. Cale Bitz and Mateo Reyes hit a double and single and drove in two runs each in the frame and Bobby Daddea contributed an RBI single.
Jefferson-Morgan 10, Brownsville 0: Evan Kniha singled three times and drove in a pair of runs in a 10-0 win in five innings for Jefferson-Morgan (8-6) over Brownsville (3-9) in nonsection action.
John Woodward also had three hits for the Rockets and was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts.
Brayden Ellsworth and Tyler McVay singled twice for Jefferson-Morgan, which scored at least one run in all five innings.
South Side Beaver 9, Burgettstown 8: South Side Beaver took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure a 9-8 win in a back-and-forth nonsection game with Burgettstown (5-8).
Burgettstown led 5-2 early, but the Rams (10-3) scored five runs between the third and fourth innings to take the lead.
Colton County hit an RBI double that cut the lead to one run in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Devils’ rally fell short. Owen Snyder singled twice.
OLSH 11, Beth-Center 0: Dean Douglass had three hits, including a double and triple and drove in a pair of runs, propelling OLSH (9-5) to an 11-0 win over Beth-Center in six innings in a nonsection game.
Wes Bebout, Austin Kurowski, Brody Bebout and Chase Bebout each had a single for the Bulldogs (1-10).
