Wild Things finish off sweep of Florence
A good weekend in Kentucky has the Washington Wild Things moving closer to a Frontier League Central Division title.
The Wild Things finished off a three-game sweep with a 9-2 win over Florence Sunday at Thomas More Stadium.
With the win the Wild Things’ magic number to win the Central Division is down to three with six games remaining in the regular season. Washington is four games ahead of Evansville in the standings.
The Otters beat Lake Erie, 7-6, Sunday.
A solid start by pitcher Kelvin Perez helped pave the way for the Wild Things on Sunday.
Perez pitched six innings and allowed one run, a solo homer to Brendan Bobo, on five hits with three strikeouts. He improved his record to 6-3.
Caleb Ketchup brought home the game’s first run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and he had an outstanding catch in the first inning. Ketchup leaped high at the wall in left-center field to rob Hank Zeisler of a home run.
Connor Peek had a two-run single in the fifth inning, which increased the lead to 3-0.
Washington put the game away in the eighth by scoring five runs. Wagner Lagrange and Isaias Quiroz belted a two-run homer apiece and Peek brought in another run with a single to give him 3 RBI.
Cole Fowler added a solo homer in the top of the ninth.
Peek, Quiroz and Ketchup had multi-hit games.
Eldridge Armstrong III pitched a pair of scoreless innings of relief.
Michael Foltz Jr. yielded a solo homer to Marcus Brodil in the ninth, but got the final three outs to finish off the win, which was the sixth straight for the Wild Things against Florence.
Jonaiker Villalobos took the loss for Florence, allowing three runs over six innings on five hits. He struck out six and walked four.
Washington finishes off the regular season with a six-game homestand, which begins with three against Gateway. The series starts Tuesday at 7 p.m. at EQT Park.
Evansville will begin a six-game series at Down East on Tuesday.
