CANONSBURG — Lee Dreshman and Collier Hartman knew of Canon-McMillan’s wrestling tradition long before they stepped on the mat Saturday afternoon for their matches in the finals of the WPIAL Class 3A Individual Wrestling Championships at Canon-McMillan High School.

The duo walks by the banners each day at school that highlight the past wrestling champions of the historic program, they hear stories from previous coaches and wrestlers and they train in a wrestling room that has featured some of the best the sport has offered.

Following their victories in the finals of their respective weight classes, the Big Mac duo can add their names to the WPIAL Individual Championship banners (they need multiple) at their school.

Dreshman, who won his title in the 107-pound weight class, earned Canon-McMillan’s 155th district title, and Hartman, who took the crown at 139, is the program’s 156th individual champion, which leads the WPIAL.

Hartman, a senior who will continue his academic and wrestling careers at the Naval Academy, won his first WPIAL title after finishing third the last two seasons with a 23-3 technical fall in four minutes over Norwin’s Brooks Blasko in the finals. Hartman won all four of his matches by technical fall.

“I think it’s best to measure your success in terms of effort and improvement,” Hartman said. “I think I am getting better, overall, which is important.”

Hartman, Dreshman and teammates Gionno Gardner (6th/121), Jon Emma (3rd/133), Aidan Finnigan (4th/145), Mason Calgaro (7th/160), Bryce Collins (3rd/189), Brayden Collins (3rd/215) and Dakota Carmona (3rd/285) will compete in the PIAA Class 3A West Regional tournament next Friday and Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School. The bracket will consist of seven WPIAL representatives, along with wrestlers from District 6, 8 (City League), 9 and 10. The top five place winners will qualify for the state tournament.

Hartman wouldn’t be surprised if he faced familiar opponents at the West Regional, but he will not allow it to affect his focus on the match ahead.

“My mentality on the mat is to not even think about my opponent’s identity,” Hartman said. “To me, they are just gray shadowdy guys, and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way, but when I’m out there, it’s not about beating anyone, it’s about proving who I am as a wrestler.

“The goal is to peak everywhere, and it’s the right time. The absolute goal is the state tournament, but I think this is a great measuring stick of where you are improving and where you need to improve.”

Dreshman, a freshman, wrestled at 114 to start the season, and even faced some opponents at 121, but once he dropped to 107, he felt a surge.

“I think it was good to drop when I did because it was before the postseason,” Dreshman said. “It is easier to finish takedowns on lighter bodies.”

Dreshman earned a 7-2 decision over West Allegheny’s Michael Johnson in the championship bout to improve his season and overall record to 44-4. Dreshman was leading 16-4 in his first bout before earning the victory by medical forfeit. He won by fall in the quarterfinals and earned a 9-1 major decision in the semifinals.

“I think I wrestled good and smart in the finals,” Dreshman said. “I had always dreamed about winning a WPIAL title, and now that I have the first one, I need to go for three more. It’s a good feeling to win this.”

Belle Vernon’s Elijah Brown won his third WPIAL championship (second in Class 3A) with a 4-0 decision over Kiski Area’s Cooper Roscosky in the finals at 215. The senior and Penn State commit is 39-1 this season and 166-20 for his career. Brown has a 7-0 record against Roscosky, but pointed out the Cavalier senior’s ability to stay close in matches, and that his opponent is no slouch with a career mark of 148-28. Roscosky will continue his academic and wrestling careers at the University of Buffalo.

“I just wanted to stay in good position, wrestle my match and take it to him in the hand-fighting,” Brown said. “I think that sends more of a message than going out there and maybe giving up a takedown or a couple points just to get a couple of points. Cooper is really good at keeping it close. As long as I can stick to my stuff and be confident in what I do, I think things will go pretty well.”

Brown pinned his first two opponents before earning a technical fall in the semifinals to set-up the finale with Roscosky.

Trinity had six qualify for the West Regional with Dom Canali’s second-place finish at 127 leading the way. The Hillers’ Jackson Hoy (3rd/114), Parker Jennings (4th/107), Edrick Williams (4th/285), Devin Junko (5th/145) and Teagan Barr (7th/189) also placed in the top seven to advance to the regional tournament.

Peters Township’s Nicholas McGarrity finished sixth at 114 and qualified for the West Regional.

Ringgold’s Evan Tolliver was runner-up at 133 after dropping a 9-5 decision to Moon’s Cael Yanek in the finals. Tolliver defeated the second and third seeds to reach the finals. Teammate Cristian Lowther was third at 160.

Waynesburg’s Roan Tustin was fifth at 215. He had a 3-2 lead on Roscosky in the third period during the semifinals, but Roscosky was able to score a late takedown for the win.

South Fayette’s Peter Leventis was seventh at 139.
