Cal men beat No. 9 Gannon for 10th straight win
The California men’s basketball team has been on a roll since the end of November and used a scorching second half to achieve a signature victory Saturday.
The Vulcans scored 57 points in the second half to rally past ninth-ranked Gannon for a 99-88 victory and run their winning streak to 10 games.
Cal (8-0, 11-4) handed Gannon (7-1, 13-2) its second loss of the season and the first one in PSAC play.
Bryson Lucas led four Vulcans in double figures with 25 points. He went 11-for-12 from the foul line. Jordyn Buchanan added 22 points and sank four three-pointers.
Buchanan made a fastbreak layup that gave Cal a 68-67 lead with 10:58 remaining. The Vulcans never trailed again.
Brayden Reynolds finished with 20 points and Jordan Clayton came off the bench to score 14.
Lucas Sekasi came off the bench to score 23 points for Gannon and Pace Prosser scored 20.
Washington & Jefferson 68, Geneva 64
Washington & Jefferson saw its lead cut to one point in the final minute, but Matt Seidl made two free throws and Alex Acosta sank one at the line to secure a 68-64 win over Geneva in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action.
South Fayette grad Michael Plasko had a game-high 21 points for the Presidents (3-1, 10-3). Plasko made a trio of three-pointers. Acosta had 10 points.
Jonathan Bertovich had 16 points for Geneva (3-1, 6-7).
Waynesburg 64, Allegheny 49
Waynesburg held Allegheny to 15 points in the first half en route to a 64-49 PAC road victory.
Jackson Rhodes led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points and went 9 for 10 from the foul line. Aiden Blake added 13 points for Waynesburg, which improved to 2-2 in conference play and 4-9 overall.
James Sittler led the Gators with 18 points. The Gators (1-3, 5-10) made only 15 of their 46 field goal attempts and turned the ball over 17 times.
Women’s Results
Gannon 82, California 46
Katie Ratliff had 20 points and fifth-ranked Gannon cruised past California 82-46.
The Knights (8-0, 16-1) led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter on their way to handing Cal (4-3, 8-10) its third straight loss.
Kennedy Bankett had 20 points for the Vulcans. Alicia Young contributed 12 points and Trinity Balog scored 10.
Washington & Jefferson 94, Geneva 66
A monster second half carried Washington & Jefferson to a 94-66 win over PAC rival Geneva (0-4, 3-10).
The Presidents (4-0, 9-4) led by one point at halftime, but won the second half 56-29.
Stellanie Loutsion and Katie Kovalchick scored 21 points each to lead W&J. Riley DeRubbo had 17 points and Jacey Mullen scored 10 off the bench.
Waynesburg 69, Allegheny 68
Kara McFadden made three free throws in the final 14 seconds to put Waynesburg ahead for good in a 69-68 win over Allegheny in PAC play.
The free throws capped off a major comeback in the fourth quarter by the Yellow Jackets, who outscored the Gators 25-9 in the final frame.
Allegheny had a chance to tie with less than a second remaining when Ava Kobus was fouled, but Kobus missed the first of two free throw attempts.
The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for Waynesburg (2-2, 6-7) against Allegheny (3-1, 6-7).
Mia Henkins led Waynesburg with 13 points. McFadden and Tori Wesolowski scored points apiece.
