Wild Things sweep doubleheader in Schaumburg
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Washington Wild Things raised the rally flag twice on Sunday.
After inclement weather washed out Saturday’s game, Sunday became a doubleheader and the Wild Things came back to win both games over Schaumburg, taking game one 8-6 and game two 9-4 at Wintrust Park.
Washington (34-17) took all three games from the Boomers (23-27) on the weekend and continues to lead the Frontier League’s Central Division.
In the first game, the Wild Things rallied from a 6-0 deficit.
Andrew Czech smacked a three-run homer in a six-run fifth inning, which put the Wild Things ahead for good. Benjamin Rosengard plated a run with a single and Anthony Brocato and Cole Fowler contributed an RBI double apiece in the frame.
Jack Brodsky made his first pro start for the Wild Things and was tagged for five runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run double from Anthony Calarco and a two-run homer from Will Prater. The Boomers added a sixth tally with a run in the second.
Brodsky ended up going four innings and received a no-decision.
Washington scored twice in the fourth. Brocato doubled to start the frame and Czech followed with an RBI double. Fowler added an RBI single.
Mack Anglin pitched a 1-2-3 fifth with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win. Michael Foltz Jr. pitched a scoreless sixth and Landon Ginn put up a zero in the seventh to earn his fifth save.
Czech, Brocato, Ginn and Kobe Foster were named to the Frontier League All-Star game. The League announced the All-Star teams Sunday afternoon. This year’s all-star game is in Florence, Ky. on July 15.
In the second game, the Boomers jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Kellum Clark plated a run with a single in the first off Wild Things starter Zander Sechrist. Alec Craig hit a two-run single in the fourth.
Washington got two back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Rosengard and a sacrifice fly from Jeff Liquori.
Antonio Monroy gave the Wild Things the lead during a five-run sixth with a two-run single and moved all the way to third after a high throw to home plate from the outfield. Brocato brought in Monroy with a two-out single to centerfield to increase the lead to 5-3. Brocato stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch. Czech walked and was brought home by a double off the bat of Liquori.
Schaumburg got one back in the sixth, but Washington escaped a big inning when Chad Coles got Christian Fedko to roll into a double play with runners on the corners and one out.
Monroy put the game away with a two-run double in the top of the seventh. It was his fourth hit of the day.
