Wild Things slug their way to sweep of Boulders
POMONA, N.Y. – The Washington Wild Things certainly made a statement this weekend against a fellow division leader.
On Sunday, it was the offense that battered the New York Boulders on its way to clinching a sweep.
Washington had 16 hits, took advantage of four errors by the Boulders in an 18-5 bludgeoning at Clover Stadium.
Connor Peek had a huge day for the Wild Things, going 4-for-5 with 4 RBI. He finished a homer short of the cycle.
The Wild Things improved to 41-19 and the Central Division leaders outscored East Division leading New York, 29-12, in the three-game series.
Washington scored multiple runs in seven of the nine innings.
The Wild Things put four runs up in the first inning, scoring two on an error on a ground ball off the bat of Cole Fowler and one more each on Peek’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Benjamin Rosengard.
After a solo homer by the Boulders’ Santino Rosso in the bottom half, the Wild Things scored three more in the second.
An RBI single by catcher Billy Sullivan and a sac fly by outfielder Anthony Brocoto brought in a run each and another run came in on a wild pitch.
All seven runs were charged to New York starter Andrew Barker, who lasted only two innings. Six of the runs were earned.
Three more came across for the Wild Things in the fifth to make it 10-2.
Peek produced an RBI triple, scored on a wild pitch and Kyle Edwards plated a run with a single.
The Boulders (34-27) plated three in the bottom of the fifth, but Washington responded with two more ryan in the sixth. Fowler brought in a run on a groundout and Peek had an RBI double.
The Wild Things scored four more in the seventh and Caleb Ketchup produced a two-run single in the eighth.
Zander Sechrist picked up the win for Washington, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings pitched. He walked six and struck out one.
Colt Anderson and Michael O’Hanlon pitched two scoreless innings apiece for Washington.
The Wild Things return home to EQT Park next week for a six-game homestand. They begin a three-game series with Lake Erie on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
