Vereb resigns as Peters Township girls soccer coach
With the season fast approaching, Peters Township is in need of a new girls soccer coach.
Pat Vereb, who has been the Peters Township girls soccer coach since 2007, has abruptly resigned after 19 seasons at the helm.
Vereb has more than 400 wins on his resume, which included stops at Keystone Oaks and Mt. Lebanon before Peters Township.
He led the Indians to three consecutive state titles from 2010 through 2012. They won WPIAL titles in 2010, ’12 and ’24.
In 2010 the Indians defeated Archbishop Wood, 1-0, in the Class 3A state title game. They earned a 1-0 win over Pennridge a year later and completed the PIAA three-peat with another 1-0 victory against Cumberland Valley.
Peters Township had a 28-match unbeaten run against WPIAL opponents between the 2024 and ’25 seasons. That included a win in penalty kicks against Seneca Valley in the 2024 WPIAL Class 4A championship. The Indians won 5-4 in penalties after the teams played to a 0-0 draw through regulation and overtime
Team championships for girls wrestling
For the first time the WPIAL will have a girls wrestling team champion this winter.
After holding tournaments for individual girls wrestling champions the last three years, the WPIAL will also have a dual meet team championship.
To enter the dual meet a team will need to have seven girls on its roster. There are 18 girls wrestling teams in the WPIAL and they’re all in one classification.
Last year, WPIAL coaches organized the Southwest Pennsylvania girls team championship at Washington & Jefferson, which was an eight-team dual tournament that had the goal of recognizing an unofficial district champion.
Canon-McMillan won the title, beating Mt. Lebanon, 59-18 in the championship match.
The Big Macs will be a favorite to win the first official WPIAL team championship this winter.
Transfers and co-ops
During its July meeting, the WPIAL approved 59 athletes who transferred eligible for their respective sports and several of those involve local schools.
Mapletown had two transfers, Isaiah Garnek (soccer, basketball and
baseball), a junior from Notre Dame High School in West Virginia and Dominic Kuis (baseball and basketball), a sophomore from Carmichaels.
Peters Township had two transfers for boys basketball in Noah Koupiaris and Grey Wible. Koupiaris, a senior, is transferring from Seton LaSalle, and Wible, a junior, from Nazareth Prep.
Lily Owens (basketball and track) has transferred from Clay-Batelle (Wva.) to Waynesburg. Owens, a sophomore, won the high jump at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference championships as a freshman in the spring.
Two local schools are involved with soccer co-ops beginning this fall. Mapletown will co-op with Albert Gallatin for boys soccer. Albert Gallatin plays in Class 3A Section 2 with Ringgold and Trinity.
Avella will co-op with McGuffey in girls soccer. McGuffey is in Class 2A Section 1 with Charleroi, Ringgold and Waynesburg.
