Everyone is chasing Jett Lawrence at High Point

By Jerin Steele 3 min read

Jett Lawrence made the move into the 450 class in 2023 and he has dominated the High Point National ever since.

He’s won the event the last three years, and along with his older brother Hunter, has been the class of the field on the big bikes.

Jett will look to make it four in a row when the gates drop on the 49th annual High Point National Pro Motocross race Saturday in Mount Morris.

Through three rounds, Jett has 138 points and an eight-point lead on Hunter in the point standings.

The Lawrences are natives of Australia.

Jett is the two-time defending Pro Motocross Champion and has won the overall in 15 of the last 19 motos in the 450 class.

Last year Jett finished first and third in the two motos at High Point Raceway to win the overall title. He swept both motos in 2024.

Each moto is 30 minutes plus two laps.

Eli Tomac won the second moto last year and finished third in the overall standings behind Hunter, who placed second in both motos.

Tomac is not racing at High Point this year because of an injury sustained during the Pro Motocross season opener at Fox Raceway.

A couple of other top riders, Chase Sexton and Justin Barcia, will miss High Point because of injury.

Jett is coming off back-to-back overall wins at Thunder Valley last weekend and Hangtown two weeks ago. He took third in the opener at Fox, which was won by Hunter.

Haiden Deegan, a rookie in the 450 class, is third in the points standings. Deegan is the son of former X Games star Brian Deegan. R.J. Hampshire is fourth in the points and French rider Dylan Ferrandis rounds out the top five.

Ken Roczen, this year’s Supercross champion, has decided not to race in the Motocross season.

250 class

Deegan swept the motos in the 250 class at High Point last year, so there will be a new champion.

It’s a class that is seemingly wide open.

Three different riders have won an overall in three events. Seth Hammaker won the opener, Levi Kitchen took round two and Jo Shimoda won last week.

Kitchen and Shimoda used consistency to take overall titles. Neither one won a moto, but achieved the best overall finish. Shimoda had a pair of second place finishes last week. Kitchen used a second and third to win his overall.

Hammaker and Kitchen are tied atop the standings with 117 points, while Shimoda is six points behind them.

Julien Beaumer and Nick Romano are fourth and fifth in the points.

Local flavor

A half dozen riders from Western Pennsylvania are entered for Saturday’s races.

Venetia native Gavin Towers will race in the 250 class for the second year in a row. He placed 23rd last year. Luke Fauser of Midland and Reece Wheaton of Irwin are also entered in the 250 class.

Western Pennsylvania riders in the 450 class are: Vincent Luhovey of Greensburg, Zach Gareis of Mars and Josh Carson of Worthington.
