Wild Things fall to Lake Erie in sudden death
AVON, Ohio – It took the Frontier League’s sudden death 11th inning, but the Washington Wild Things have dropped their second series of the season.
Joe Redfield hit a walk-off single to propel Lake Erie to an 8-7 extra innings win over Washington at Forefront Field Sunday.
The only other time Washington (29-11) lost a series this season was when Florence took two of three at EQT Park on May 19-21.
If a Frontier league game is tied after 10 innings, then the game goes to sudden death. The home team can choose between hitting with a runner on first and nobody out or pitching in the same scenario. If the team that’s batting scores, they win and if the pitching team gets three outs before a run scores, they win.
Lake Erie (17-22) chose to hit and the decision paid off.
Derek Vegas, the automatic runner on first base, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Watkins and to third on a flyout by Sebastian Alexander before scoring on Redfield’s single. Wild Things reliever Kelvin Perez, who entered in the 11th inning, took the loss.
Christian Scafidi, who faced one batter in the 10th, was credited with the win for the Crushers.
Prior to the 11th, Washington and Lake Erie scored a run apiece in the 10th.
Redfield’s hit capped a wild game.
Pavin Parks blasted a two-run homer in the first and Lake Erie added two more runs in the fourth to forge a 4-0 lead.
All four runs were charged to Washington starter Colt Anderson, who went four innings in a no-decision.
The Wild Things rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs, an inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Andrew Czech. Jeff Liquori contributed an RBI double in the frame.
Lake Erie immediately retook the lead in the bottom half on a two-run homer by Alexander off Wild Things reliever Michael O’Hanlon.
The lead held until the top of the ninth when Caleb Ketchup hit a soft liner that fell inside the left field line for a two-run single. Ketchup’s hit came with two strikes and ultimately forced extra innings.
Wild Things manager Tom Vaeth was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Prior to Sunday’s game the Wild Things placed outfielder Anthony Brocato on the 7-day injured list. The move was retroactive to Saturday.
Washington remained in first place in a tightly-contested Central Division despite dropping two of three on the weekend.
The Wild Things return home Tuesday to play a morning game against Windy City. First pitch at EQT Park is scheduled for 10:35 a.m.
