Strong day for Canon-Mac at girls wrestling regional
Canon-McMillan junior Marlee Solomon pinned Derry’s Kaila Keesecker in 17 seconds to win the 118-pound title at the PIAA girls wrestling west regional Saturday at Mt. Lebanon.
Solomon’s win helped Canon-McMillan place first in the team standings. The Big Macs scored 105.5 points which was a comfortable margin over Mt. Lebanon’s 83 points.
Solomon was the lone local champion Saturday. She improved to 35-0 on the season and 74-3 in her career. She’ll look to defend her state title next weekend in Hershey.
Joining Solomon in Hershey were the top four finishers in each weight class in the regional.
Canon-McMillan had six wrestlers that qualified. Araceli Clem (100 pounds) placed third, while Malia Ramos (106), Yunuen Ayala (124), Alaya Henderson (148) and Audrey Calgaro (170) placed fourth.
Fort Cherry’s Ella Trahan was the runner-up at 106 pounds, falling in a third period pin to Shaler’s Blythe Letters. Trahan defeated Letters at the 106-pound WPIAL championship match last Saturday.
Avella’s Abigail Dolanch lost by a 17-2 tech. fall to Laurel’s Maggie Alfera in the 136-pound final.
Local wrestlers that placed third to qualify for state were: Burgettstown’s Raya Sentipal (112), West Greene’s Josie Mason (136) and Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli (190).
Fourth place finishers were: Ringgold’s Mia Scalise (118) and Avella’s Gabriella Dolanch (155).
The state wrestling championships are Thursday through Saturday at Hershey’s Giant Center.
