High school roundup: Jeff-Morgan clinches playoff berth with win over Jeannette

John Woodward struck out nine over six innings, Deakyn DeHoet hit a two-run homer and Jefferson-Morgan clinched a playoff berth with a 6-1 victory over Jeannette in Class A Section 1 baseball game Monday.

Jefferson-Morgan (7-4, 12-7) is currently in third place in the section and can tie Avella for second place by beating Jeannette in the second game of the series today. Jeannette (5-6, 9-7) can still make the playoffs with a win over J-M and a Carmichaels loss to West Greene.

Woodward allowed only four hits, including a solo homer by Jeannette’s Evyn Yargeau to lead off the fifth inning, cutting J-M’s lead to 3-1.

DeHoet drove in three runs, Woodward had two hits and drove in a run, and Jaymison Robinson scored twice.

California 5, Chartiers-Houston 0: Weston Monticelli pitched a complete game shutout with three strikeouts to pace California (9-2, 12-6) in a 5-0 win over Chartiers-Houston (5-6, 9-8) in Class 2A Section 1.

Monticelli scattered five hits and did not walk a batter. Kaden Weston singled twice and had an RBI for California, which took advantage of three Chartiers-Houston errors.

Parker Riggle went 3-for-3 with two doubles for the Bucs and starting pitcher Brady Robaugh allowed only two earned runs in a complete game.

Carmichaels 9, West Greene 8: Carmichaels clinched a playoff spot in dramatic fashion, scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 9-8 win over West Greene in Class A Section 1.

The victory coupled with a loss by Jeannette to Jefferson-Morgan guarantees the Mikes (6-5, 7-9) at least a share of fourth place.

Connor Lapana had a bases-clearing double in the eight-run seventh for the Mikes. West Greene (2-9, 2-15) responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half, but the comeback fell short. Jackson Grimes had a three-run homer for the Pioneers in the seventh. Darren Knight and Levi Yeater produced an RBI double apiece.

Peters Township 14, South Fayette 9: Colin Stofik and Gabe Marino homered to help Peters Township win a slugfest 14-9 over South Fayette in Class 5A Section 2 and keep itself in the playoff race.

The Indians (5-7, 9-9) stayed in contention for fourth place in the section.

Peters Township scored five runs in the top of the sixth to break an 8-8 tie.

Cody Bungert had three hits, including two doubles, for the Lions (7-4, 10-7). He drove in two runs. RJ Borgesi had three hits and RBI each.

Fort Cherry 11, Burgettstown 6: Fort Cherry used an 8-run fourth inning to rally and remained unbeaten with an 11-6 win over Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 1.

The Blue Devils (5-6, 7-10) led 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth. Fort Cherry (11-0, 16-0) had six hits in the frame, including a two-run single by Colton Temple.

Temple also hit two home runs in the contest and NAthan Wolfe had a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Matt Bredel doubled, homered and drove in three runs for Burgettstown.

Ringgold 2, Laurel Highlands 0: Anthony Koziel pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout as Ringgold clinched a spot in the postseason with a 2-0 victory over Laurel Highlands (2-9, 4-12).

The Rams (6-5, 9-9) locked up fourth place in Class 4A Section 2.

Koziel had nine strikeouts and did not yield a walk.

Dylan Bartkus smacked an RBI double in the fourth inning to give the Rams the lead and Koziel singled in a run in the fifth.

Bentworth 8, Albert Gallatin 4: Jacob Cavanaugh singled three times and scored four runs to help Bentworth (6-10) pick up an 8-4 nonsection win at Albert Gallatin (1-17).

Clint Havanis and Cameron Krejci drove in three runs apiece for the Bearcats. Sam Wade was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts over six innings. He had a double and drove in one run.

Waynesburg 8, Charleroi 5: Jeffery Blair had five RBI as Waynesburg clinched a playoff berth with an 8-5 victory over Charleroi (6-5, 9-8) in a Class 3A Section 4 game.

The Raiders (6-5, 7-11) solidified at least a share of fourth place with the win and could finish as high as second.

Blair singled twice from the No. 9 spot in the batting order and Jarrett Tretnik had three hits and drove in two.

Charleroi led 5-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, but the Raiders scored three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth.

CJ Corwin earned the win allowing five runs, one earned, over 6.2 innings.

Brock Henderson, Dylan Klinger and Tristyn Woods had an RBI each for the Cougars.

Belle Vernon 3, West Mifflin 2: Belle Vernon (9-2, 13-3) scored three times in the first inning and starting pitcher Ian Porter made it hold up by pitching a complete game in a 3-2 victory over West Mifflin (8-3, 13-6) in a battle for second place in Class 4A Section 2.

Porter struck out three, did not walk a batter and allowed one earned run. The Leopards took advantage of a Titans error in the first inning, scoring two runs and got another on a groundout by Vincenzo Francia.

Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Mapletown 0: Anthony Grippo hit a three-run homer and Greensburg Central Catholic secured a 16-0 win in four innings over Mapletown (0-11, 3-16) in a Class A Section 1 game.

Grippo also had a two-run double for the Centurions (11-0, 13-0).

Carson Vanata had the lone hit for the Maples.

Softball

Bentworth 11, West Greene 0: Sydney Gonglik pitched a five-inning perfect game and hit two home runs to lead Bentworth (17-1) to a 11-0 win over West Greene (11-6) in a nonsection game.

Gonglik led off the first inning with a homer and added another solo shot in the third. She struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced.

Sofia Gaussa, Makayla Gonglik, Nora Lindley, Alexa Babirad and Addison McVicker had two hits apiece for the Bearcats, who had 14 hits on the day.

Beth-Center 11, Avella 1: Kiera Lamp drove in four runs and had three hits as Beth-Center defeated Avella 11-1 in six innings in a Class A Section 2 game.

Lamp had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings and plated a pair with a double in the sixth.

Kendall Welsh was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs (4-6, 5-8). She had 13 strikeouts. Bella Stepp and Riley Lancaster singled twice.

Emma Day had an RBI single for the Eagles (0-10, 0-14).

McGuffey 5, Burgettstown 2: Courtney Bedillion was the winning pitcher and had a double for McGuffey (9-5) in 5-2 nonsection win at Burgettstown (7-7).

Bedillion allowed five hits and struck out four. Sidney Dobrzynski singled twice and drove in a run in the third inning.

Madelina Guiddy and Alice Kubatka doubled for the Blue Devils.

Monessen 4, Mapletown 3: Joey Hurst drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh and was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts as Monessen (6-8) edged Mapletown 4-3 in a nonsection game.

Hurst had two hits, including a double and a pair of RBI. Grace Clingenpeel also doubled for the Greyhounds. Makenna Lotspeich had an RBI triple for the Maples (5-11) in the third inning, which tied the game at 3-3.

Ringgold 10, Oakland Catholic 1: Annie Pelissero, had three hits, including a solo homer in the third inning, and was the winning pitcher to help Ringgold (1-11, 1-13) pick up its first win of the year, 10-1, over Oakland Catholic (2-10, 2-10) in a Class 4A Section 2 game.

Pelissero tripled in the fifth inning, singled in the fourth and had three strikeouts in the circle.

Alice Ramous finished with three hits for the Rams, while Jules Campa, Addy Allen and Rylee Morrison had two hits apiece.

Frazier 7, Charleroi 4: Emme Travelena had a pair of hits and RBI to lead Frazier (11-7) past Charleroi, 7-4, in a nonsection game.

Lyla Brunner had three hits and drove in a pair for the Cougars (5-11). Zoey Zurenski, Delani Anderson and Emma Essington also had two hits for the Cougars. The Commodores plated two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull away.

South Fayette 8, Hampton 4: Liv Bonacci had four hits in five at bats to power South Fayette to an 8-4 nonsection win at Hampton (11-5).

Bonacci singled four times and had an RBI. Caroline Kelly had a pair of hits and plated two runs for the Lions (9-8).

Trinity 12, Chartiers Valley 2: Trinity raced out to a 5-run lead through two innings on its way to a 12-2 nonsection victory over Chartiers Valley (2-11) in six innings.

Nina Christy drove in four runs for the Hillers. She had a two-run single in the second inning and plated two more with a double in the fourth.

The Hillers (17-3) belted out 14 hits and concluded the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. Elora Friend singled three times.

Baldwin 4, Canon-McMillan 0: Melinda Defelice pitched five shutout innings with three strikeouts for Baldwin in a 4-0 win over Canon-McMillan in nonsection action.

Ava Bonacci tripled for the Highlanders (14-4) and had an RBI. Sophie Carl singled twice for the Big Macs (7-10).

Laurel Highlands 5, Carmichaels 4: Carmichaels got the tying run to second base in the seventh, but its rally fell short in a 5-4 loss at Laurel Highlands (10-4) in nonsection.

Bailey Barnyak had a solo homer in the seventh as part of a three-hit day. She allowed only one earned run over six innings pitched and struck out 12. Carmichaels (14-4) committed three errors.

Gianna Miller hit a three-run homer for the Mustangs and Payton Senge was the winning pitcher with a dozen strikeouts.
