Penguins deal Hallander to Edmonton
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from Edmonton in exchange for forward Filip Hallander.
The deal, announced Wednesday, gives the Penguins depth on the blue line.
The move came prior to the Penguins’ game at the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, which ended past the deadline for this edition. Full game details can be found at www.observer-reporter.com
Hallander, 26, was off to a promising start this season for Pittsburgh, scoring a goal to go with two assists in two games for the Penguins. The former second-round draft pick has struggled to gain a foothold in the NHL during his time in Pittsburgh, appearing in just 18 games across four seasons.
Hallander missed almost all of last season because of a blood clot in his right leg. He also spent two seasons playing in Sweden from 2023-25 before resigning with the Penguins.
The Penguins will be Stastney’s third team in less than a year. He was traded from Nashville to Edmonton last December, then signed a one-year deal with the Oilers in July.
The 26-year-old Stastney has four goals and 15 assists in 117 career games for Edmonton and Nashville.
The native of Woodridge, Illinois has represented the United States on the international stage at the 2020 World Junior Championship and the 2018 World Under-18 Championship, bringing home a silver medal in 2018. He was also a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2016-18.
Prior to being drafted by Nashville in the fifth round (131st overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft, Stastney played four seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame from 2018-22, serving as an alternate captain his final season.
In other moves: the Penguins placed forward Andrei Kuzmenko on the non-roster list.
