Salvini’s big night powers Fort Cherry past Bentworth
It was Eli Salvini’s night.
Salvini and Ryan Huey have made up a formidable 1-2 punch in Fort Cherry’s backfield, and usually, it’s hard to tell who had the bigger night.
But Salvini rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, eclipsing 1,000 for the season.
Huey didn’t have to have a big night and only had four carries, gaining 34 yards in Fort Cherry’s 48-7 win.
Fort Cherry has been an angry football team lately.
Ever since losing to Monessen, the Rangers have been on the warpath.
Bentworth was the latest casualty.
“I think that our kids always play with a certain level of physicality,” Rangers coach Tanner Garry said after. “It’s something we harp on, but I think after that Monessen game, it kind of really lit a fire under them, and you know was a learning point. I think that you know they know that they’re better than what they showed and kind of had a chip on their shoulder ever since, making sure that they don’t let that happen again.”
Bentworth coach David Pordash knows Fort Cherry is good.
“They don’t have a soccer program,” Pordash said. “We lose thirty kids to soccer, so you know they got good kids. They got good Jimmys and Joes over there, and our kids just ain’t gonna match up with them for that.”
Colin Sieg threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, ending the night with 152 yards passing on 9-12, and rushing for 23 yards on three carries with the score.
His top receiver was Landon Trnavsky, who ended with 97 yards and a touchdown on four catches.
Fort Cherry got on the board first with a drive that lasted 2:52 and was capped off by Ryan Huey’s 5-yard touchdown run.
Bentworth’s first possession lasted just one play. Fort Cherry’s Josh Silveria forced a fumble, and the Rangers offense went back to work again at the Bentworth 44.
Two plays later, Colin Sieg hit Joey Barna for a 33-yard TD to put Fort Cherry ahead by two scores.
Bentworth’s next possession lasted longer than a play, but not by much. Fort Cherry’s third drive ended with a 33-yard TD run by Eli Salvini, which effectively put the game to bed with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
Bentworth didn’t help its comeback bid with an interception to Fort Cherry’s Zach Rodriguez. Once again, Fort Cherry scored, this time on Sieg’s second TD pass of the game, a 17-yard completion to Landon Trnavsky.
Salvini”s second TD run of the day put Fort Cherry ahead by 35.
Fort Cherry looks to keep it going at Jeanette next Friday at 7. Betworth will be at Sto-Rox at the same time.
