Burgettstown shuts out Sto-Rox, improves to 4-0
BURGETTSTOWN – What goes best with a strong offense?
Why a great defense, of course.
Burgettstown’s football team appears to have both. The Blue Devils swarmed over Sto-Rox, 28-0, on a chilly Friday night.
Sto-Rox came into the game after a 74-0 victory over Summitt Academy last week while Burgettstown came into the game outscoring three opponents 111-7.
The Blue Devils entered the game at 3-0, quite a turnaround from last season’s 1-8 record.
Not only did Burgettstown (1-0, 4-0) produce four turnovers, it did so at crucial parts of the game.
The next three weeks, when Burgettstown plays Monessen, Fort Cherry and Washington, which will go a long way in determining the winner of the Black Hills Conference.
Burgettstown rode the strong arm of quarterback Blake Neal to take a 14-0 lead at halftime. Neal hit split end Bruce Speer from four yards out with just 24 seconds left in the first quarter.
Neal found Christopher Bongiorni from 12 yards out with 46 seconds before halftime.
Bryce Speer had two interceptions, one in each quarter and had 12 carries on offense. Neal finished the half completing 10 of 12 passes for 66 yards. Brady Rightweiser rushed for 77 yards on 12 tries. He scored from 12 yards out for the first score of the third quarter.
