MONESSEN – Fort Cherry’s 37-game winning streak in the regular season is over.

Monessen took the lead in the second quarter and held on from there to score a 14-12 win over the Rangers (0-1, 3-1) in the Class A Black Hills Conference opener.

After a scoreless first quarter, Monessen got on the board when Kaier Payne threw a 24-yard touchdown to Jay’veon Jeffries. The touchdown was set up by a Monessen interception. A successful two-point try made it 8-0.

Eli Salvini scored on a 3-yard run for Fort Cherry, but a two-point attempt failed making it 8-6.

Jeffries returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Greyhounds (1-0, 4-0) a 14-6 lead at the break.

A 12-yard touchdown pass from Colin Sieg to Nathan Wolfe cut the deficit to 14-12 with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth, but the Rangers were stopped on a fourth down in the final minute.
