Trinity holds off Mars’ rally to score road win
MARS – Owen Gardner scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to help Trinity spurn Mars’ comeback bid in a 27-21 win in nonconference action Friday night.
The Hillers (3-2) led 21-3 in the second quarter, but Mars scored 18 unanswered points to tie the game before Gardner’s game-winning touchdown.
Braden Berdar opened the contest by returning a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.
Chase Kostelnik caught a 75-yard touchdown from Owen Samogala to make it 14-3. Samogala then scored on a 49-yard run.
Smyth Dunaway caught a 61 yard touchdown from Nate Walker before halftime to cut the deficit to 21-10.
A field goal by Gus Coffield followed by a Jameson Garvin 5-yard touchdown and two-point conversion tied the game for Mars (1-4).
Samogala was 8 of 13 passing for 196 yards. Kostelnik had five catches for 144 yards.
