W&J gets 800th victory at Case Western Reserve
Washington & Jefferson racked up 341 rushing yards on its way to a milestone victory.
The Presidents secured the 800th win in program history with a 35-7 triumph at Case Western Reserve Saturday night in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
Washington & Jefferson is the 22nd NCAA football team to win 800 games and the third in Division III joining Mount Union and Wittenberg.
Andrew Sharp gained 186 yards and scored four touchdowns on just 15 carries, while Braylon Wagner added 120 yards and a score on just seven rushes. It was the first time in nearly four years that W&J had a pair of 100 yard rushers in the same game.
On defense, the Presidents had seven sacks, forced two turnovers, three turnovers on downs and limited CWRU to 3-of-15 on third down attempts.
Sharp found the end zone three times in the first half. His four-yard touchdown run opened the scoring at the 5:20 mark of the first quarter.
Sharp tacked on a pair of rushing scores in the second quarter, a 43-yarder and one from 25 yards. His fourth touchdown was a 52-yarder in the third quarter.
Wagner rushed 77 yards early in the third quarter for his first collegiate touchdown.
Westminster 21, Waynesburg 20
A blocked extra point proved to be the difference as Westminster edged Waynesburg (0-2, 0-4) in PAC play Saturday in New Wilmington.
Zayne Cawley scored on an 8-yard run with 2:14 remaining to cut the deficit to one, but the extra-point attempt was blocked, thwarting Waynesburg’s bid to tie the game.
Westminster (1-0, 1-2) led 14-0 late in the second quarter when Waynesburg’s Tyler Richmond caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jaylen Bester to make it a one-score game at halftime.
Isaiah Fields had a 12-yard touchdown reception from Dominic Hickman at the 9:13 mark of the third, and the score was tied at 14-14.
Sean O’Shea scored on a five-yard run and Mitchell Tingley what turned out to be a crucial extra point to give Westminster a 21-14 lead with 6:17 remaining.
