Worth repeating: Cal takes 2 from Millersville, both in OT

K.J. McClurg scored a game-high 27 points and undefeated California outlasted Millersville 89-87 in overtime in the PSAC opener for both teams Friday.

California’s Zyan Collins, who scored 14 points, tossed in two free throws with nine seconds left in regulation that tied the score at 76-76 and forced overtime.

In the extra session, Cal point guard Donald Whitehead made a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left that put the Vulcans (1-0, 5-0) on top, 88-85.

The Marauders (0-1, 4-2) closed to within one point but the Vulcans’ D.J. Slaughter made it a two-point game with a free throw with three seconds remaining. Cal (1-0, 5-0) was 22 of 27 at the free-throw line. McClurg was 12-for-14.

Jermaine Hall and Antoine Arnett each had 13 points for Cal and Bryson Lucas tallied 10. The Vulcans had three players foul out.

Jaden Faulkner and Day Waters each had 22 points to lead Millersville. Both Faulkner and Day scored half of their points at the free-throw line, where Millersville was 28-for-36.

Women’s results

California 75, Millersville 69, OT:

Iyahnna Williams scored six of her team-high 18 points in overtime, helping California complete a late-game comeback for a 75-68 victory over host Millersville in the PSAC opener for the Vulcans.

Cal (1-0, 5-1) trailed by 10 points with six minutes remaining in regulation. The Vulcans closed to within 59-58 when they forced a Millersville turnover with less than 25 seconds to play. Williams then converted a three-point play that put Cal ahead 61-59 with 18 seconds left in regulation.

Millersville’s Makiah Shaw, who scored a game-high 26 points, made a layup with two seconds to play that forced overtime at 61-61.

Two free throws by Williams put Cal ahead for good at 63-62.

Nina Shaw was the only other Cal player to score in double figures as he finished with 11 points to go with five assists. Shaw scored four points in the overtime.
