Virginia State rallies, beats Cal women

Anii Harris scored 14 points, Amesha Miller came off the bench to add 13 and Virginia State overcame a halftime deficit to beat California 65-53 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Monday night at the Convocation Center.

Cal (4-4) led 26-20 at halftime, but Virginia State (6-2) outscored the Vulcans 45-27 in the second half.

Virginia State cut Cal’s lead to 41-40 after three quarters and then moved ahead in the fourth by making 11 of 13 shots from the field and all three of its free throws over the final 10 minutes.

Cal, which was outrebounded 48-27, shot only 33 percent for the game.

Alicia Young paced the Vulcans with a game-high 17 points and Talia Gilliard contributed 10.
