Small college basketball: Big second half wins for Waynesburg

Antone Baker had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, and the Waynesburg University men dominated the second half, pulling away for a 76-61 victory over Franciscan on Wednesday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference basketball game.

The win pushed Waynesburg to the .500 mark in the conference at 4-4. The Yellow Jackets, who have won three in a row, are 7-6 overall.

Franciscan (2-6, 5-7) led 38-31at halftime but Waynesburg held the Barons to only 23 points in the second half on 20 percent shooting from the field.

Waynesburg erupted for 45 second-half points and shot 59 percent over the final 20 minutes.

Jordan McLoyd scored 15 points for Waynesburg. McLoyd and Baker played key roles in a 16-3 run early in the second half that put Waynesbu8rg in the lead for good at 52-43.

Grove City 81, Wash & Jeff 68

Chase Yarberough scored 17 points and Mike Christenson had 16, leading Grove City to an 81-68 win over Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

W&J couldn’t overcome a rough shooting first half, when it made only 33 percent and fell behind 31-26 at halftime.

J.R. Mazza came off the bench and scored a game-high 24 points for W&J. Alex Acosta had 21 points.

Women’s results

California 54, West Chester 51

Alicia Young scored 15 points and California got back on the winning track with a hard-fought 54-51 victory over visiting West Chester in a PSAC game.

The Vulcans (4-2, 9-3) held West Chester to 16 points in the first half and took a 13-point lead into intermission.

Dejah Terrell had a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds for Cal before fouling out. Iyahnna Williams scored 11 points.

West Chester’s Leah Johnson matched Young for game scoring honors with 15 points.

Cal hosts third-ranked Gannon on Saturday (1 p.m.).

Wash & Jeff 78, Grove City 49

Washington & Jefferson scored 50 first-half points and rolled to a 78-49 victory over visiting Grove City in a key PAC game.

The Presidents (7-1, 11-2) made 13 of 17 shots in a 30-point second quarter, when they took a 20-15 lead at the end of one period and turned it into a 50-30 halftime advantage. Grove City (5-3, 6-7) never got closer as the Wolverines were held to five points in the third quarter.

Twelve different Presidents entered the scoring column led by Stellanie Loutsion. The former Canon-McMillan standout tallied game-high 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Adalynn Cherry scored 11 points and Katie Kovalchick contributed 10. Meghan Dryburgh grabbed 12 rebounds.

Mara Polczynski led Grove City in scoring with 12 points.

Waynesburg 65, Franciscan 37

Kalista Friday led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and Waynesburg rolled to a 65-37 victory over Franciscan in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg held Franciscan to only 14 points in the first half as the Yellow Jackets held a 24-point halftime edge.

Mia Henkins was the only other Waynesburg player in double figures with 11 points. Julz Morbacher had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Waynesburg’s record is only 1-7 in the PAC and 2-10 overall, but the Yellow Jackets have won two of their last three.
