Small college basketball: Hall, Lucas spark Cal to PSAC win

Jermaine Hall Jr. and Bryson Lucas combined for 32 points and 26 rebounds, powering No. 13-ranked California to a 77-64 victory over Seton Hill in a PSAC West Division men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Cal (7-1, 13-1) led 36-31 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. The Vulcans used only six players but four of them scored in double figures, led by Hall’s 18 points that went with 10 rebounds and four assists.
Lucas scored 14 points, grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and had five assists.
K.J. McClurg tossed in 17 points for the Vulcans and Zyan Collins had 15 points and five assists.
Seton Hill (4-4, 9-5) was led by Caleb Whitaker, who scored 16 points. Ryan Meis had 13 points.
Westminster 71, Wash & Jeff 69
Quincy Jones made a go-ahead basket with 43 seconds remaining and Westminster outlasted Washington & Jefferson 71-69 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game played in New Wilmington.
W&J (1-9, 2-12) trailed by nine points at halftime and was down 63-58 after a basket by Jones with 3:17 left in regulation. However, the Titans (5-5, 7-7) didn’t score again in regulation. W&J tied the score at 63-63 on a basket by Matt Seidl with 2:11 remaining but neither team scored again until overtime.
Jones’ go-ahead field goal gave Westminster a 69-68 lead and the Titans’ Andrew Clark made two free throws with six seconds left that made it a three-point game.
Westminster then fouled with four seconds remaining, sending W&J to the free-throw line. The Presidents’ Nick Gearhart, who scored 13 points, made the first foul shot and intentionally missed the shot attempt. Westminster, however, grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.
Alex Acosta had another double-double for W&J. He scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Brandon Jakiela contributed 11 points.
Trey DePietro led four Westminster players in double figures with 16 points.
Women’s results
Wash & Jeff 62, Westminster 50
Sparked by 11 different players in the scoring column, Washington & Jefferson rolled to a 62-50 victory at Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
The Presidents (9-1, 13-2) forged a commanding 38-18 halftime lead as nine W&J players scored in the first half. W&J led by as many as 24 points (50-26) in the third quarter.
Bryan Bezjak led a balanced W&J attack with 12 points and Meghan Drybaugh followed with nine.
Natalie Murrio scored a game-high 17 points for Westminster (6-4, 8-6). The Titans’ Lindsay Bell grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds but Westminster was unable to overcome 28 percent shooting for the game.
The Presidents will be back on the court Saturday afternoon at Allegheny.
Cal 61, Seton Hill 53
Dejah Terrell had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Sierra Bermudez came off the bench to score 13 points and California held off Seton Hill 61-53 in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.
Cal (5-3, 10-4) started fast, racing out to a 23-7 lead early in the second quarter. Seton Hill (4-4, 7-7), however, battled back and closed to within 31-25 at halftime and eventually took a 39-37 lead late in the third quarter.
The Griffins’ Hallie Cowan tied the score at 53-53 with a layup, but Cal closed the game with an 8-0 run. A basket by Terrell with 2:30 remaining gave the Vulcans the lead for good. Bermudez tacked on two free throws to make it a four-point game and Nina Shaw made four foul shots to close the scoring.
Cal’s Allycia Harris scored 11 points before fouling out.
Cowman led Seton Hill with 13 points. The Griffins’ high-scoring Christiane Frey, who entered the game averaging 20 points per game, was held to six.
