Vulcans finally solve IUP

End 21-game losing streak in series

INDIANA – K.J. McClurg scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, sparking 17th-ranked California to a hard-fought 65-57 victory over Indiana in a key PSAC West Division men’s basketball game Monday night.

The win snapped a 21-game losing streak for California against IUP. It was the Vulcans’ first victory at Indiana since Jan. 18, 2014, which was also the last win in the series for Cal. California had lost 12 in a row at Indiana.

The teams entered the night tied for second place in the division. California (11-2, 17-2) moved a game ahead of IUP (10-3, 13-6) as the Vulcans extended their winning streak to four games.

Neither team shot the basketball well. The Vulcans made 35 percent from the field but held IUP to 20 percent shooting in the first half and 30 percent for the game. The Crimson Hawks finished 8-for-36 from three-point range after making only 2 of 18 from behind the stripe in the first half.

Cal led 21-18 at halftime and the scoring picked up in the second half.

The Vulcans, who were only 3 of 19 from three-point range, received 12 points from Donald Whitehead and 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from Jermaine Hall.

Garvin Clarke scored a game-high 21 points for IUP. Ethan Porterfield had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Jaylen Stewart tallied 10 points.

Women’s result

Indiana, 61-51

The California women fell behind big in the first quarter and the Vulcans were never able to recover in a 61-51 loss to Indiana.

The win moved IUP (10-3, 14-4) ahead of California (9-4, 14-5) in the PSAC West standings and ended the Vulcans’ winning streak at five games.

IUP led 15-6 after one quarter and 32-21 at halftime. The Vulcans shot only 9 percent (2-for-22) from the field in the first quarter and 29 percent for the game.

Dejah Terrell led the Vulcans in scoring with 12 points. She also had 11 rebounds. Allycia Harris scored 10 points.

Rhamena Henderson scored a game-high 18 points for IUP and Kiera Baughman had 13.
