W&J baseball ousted in region final

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Washington & Jefferson baseball team won a pair of elimination games Saturday but lost to eighth-ranked Salve Regina 12-3 Sunday in the final round of the NCAA Division III tournament’s Cortland Regional.

W&J ends its season with a 34-14 record. Salve Regina (36-8) advances to the super regionals.

W&J defeated Colby 7-0 and SUNY Cortland 3-1 on Saturday.

Against Colby, pitcher Dante DiMatteo tossed a complete game shutout. The junior tossed a career-high 128 pitches. DiMatteo struck out 10 and walked four. He allowed only three hits, two of the three coming in the first three batters of the game.

Brian Feldman hit a two-run homer and Jacob LaDuca drove in a pair.

Junior Ethan Marszalek tossed a complete-game seven-hitter to beat SUNY Cortland. He walked two and struck out nine. Brendan Cruz’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie.

Marszalek and DiMatteo combined for 19 strikeouts over 18 innings.

Against Salve Regina, W&J jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind a pair of first-inning home runs. Drew Garth hit a solo home run, and after Scout Zaas singled Feldman hit another two-run homer.

Salve Regina tied the score in the third inning and went ahead with a two-run fourth. Tyler Cannoe hit two solo home runs for the Seahawks.
