W&J men battle back but fall short at Oberlin
Washington & Jefferson battled back from a 20-point deficit and had the lead with less than a minute remaining before Oberlin regained the advantage and edged the Presidents, 64-63, on Saturday at the Phillips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio.
The Yeomen (2-0) had a seven-point advantage with 4:47 left in the second half, but W&J (1-1) responded with an 8-0 run for a one-point lead on Alex Acosta’s layup.
Oberlin regained the lead following Acosta’s basket and the Presidents weren’t able to hit the game-winning shot.
Matt Seidl led W&J in scoring with 16 points. Matthew Carte had 12 and Acosta dropped 11. Seidl and Carte had five assists apiece.
The Yeomen held a 39-27 advantage at halftime.
The Presidents outscored Oberlin, 36-25, in the second half. A 22-4 rally in the second half cut the deficit to 55-53 with 7:22 remaining.
South Fayette graduate Michael Plasko was instrumental in the run.
W&J hosts Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
