Small college roundup: Vulcans roll to 3rd win

Keith Palek made 10 of 13 shots and scored 25 points as California rolled to an easy 115-76 victory over host Penn State Fayette on Wednesday night.

It was the third consecutive win to start the season for the Vulcans and their most dominant. Cal led 53-31 at halftime, after shooting 53 percent in the first half. Palek had 16 points in the first half.

Keondre DeShields, a freshman from Laurel Highlands, scored 14 points, as did Dalman Alexander.

The Vulcans had 13 players in the scoring column. Cal shot 57 percent for the game and outrebounded Penn State Fayette 50-22.

Cal has scored at least 112 points in two of its three games.

Women’s results

Carnegie Mellon 80, Washington & Jefferson 77

Catherine Or scored 22 points and made six crucial free throws over the final 94 seconds as Carnegie Mellon edged visiting Washington & Jefferson 80-77 in a non-conference game.

CMU improves to 3-0 under first-year head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller, who left Trinity High School to take the Tartans’ job. W&J falls to 2-1.

The game was close throughout. It was tied 40-40 at halftime before CMU pulled ahead at 61-53 after the pivotal third quarter.

W&J trailed 73-66 with a little more than two minutes left and made a late charge. Or kept CMU ahead by making six consecutive free throws but a layup by Stellanie Loutsion cut the Tartans’ lead to 80-77 with seven seconds to play. CMU then missed two free throws and W&J rebounded with a chance to force overtime but the Presidents couldn’t get off a shot before time expired.

Anisha Chintala scored 19 points for CMU and Nicole Timko came off the bench to add 10.

W&J’s Jaden Wan tossed in a game-high 23 points. Meghan Dryburgh added 11 and Reagan Kadlecik had 10.
