No letdown for No. 15 Carnegie Mellon in win over Waynesburg
Carnegie Mellon showed why it’s ranked No. 15 in the country following a 42-0 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday in Pittsburgh.
The Tartans (5-0, 5-0) were coming off a thrilling overtime victory last week at Washington & Jefferson after trailing by 19 at halftime but didn’t have any sense of a letdown against the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 1-4).
Special teams helped Carnegie Mellon get on the scoreboard when Ethan Ming returned a blocked punt five yards for a touchdown and South Fayette graduate Justin Caputo converted on his first of six PATs with 55 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Tartans pushed their advantage to 21-0 at halftime on Ben Mills’ four-yard touchdown pass to Reece Kolke and Joey McGinnis IV’s one-yard run.
Mills threw his second touchdown pass, a 16-yarder to Will Squibb, with 10:40 left in the third quarter before McGinnis IV added another one-yard touchdown run at 5:09 of the third.
McGinnis IV threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Luca Cuttita at 10:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Mills was 23 of 26 for 232 yards and no interceptions. Squibb pulled in 9 receptions for 128 yards and Peters Township graduate Brendan McCullough caught 5 passes for 48 yards.
Waynesburg’s Zayne Cawley rushed for a game-high 144 yards on 28 carries.
