Vulcans edge Seton Hill to set-up showdown with Slippery Rock
California escaped Offutt Field in Greensburg with a 28-21 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
The Vulcans (5-1, 3-0 PSAC) broke a 21-21 tie when Bobby Boyd Jr. scored on a 23-yard run to cap a 13-play, 92-yard drive that took 6:17 for the game-winning score with 14 seconds remaining. Boyd Jr., who gained 72 yards on 17 carries, opened the scoring with a three-yard run with 7:54 left in the second quarter.
Following the go-ahead touchdown, the Griffins’ Jake Cruz threw two incompletions before finding Cody Rubrecht for a 17-yard gain and a first down at the Seton Hill 42. The Griffins (2-4, 0-2 PSAC) were flagged for a personal foul, which was declined, and the game ended as the clock read 0:00.
After Boyd Jr. found the end zone, Seton Hill tied the game at 7-7 when Cruz threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Todd Phillips and Ben Zavatchan made the first of three extra points with 3:16 left in the second period.
Eric Willis III pulled in an eight-yard touchdown reception from Davis Black as time expired in the first half, and Anthony Beitko made the second of four PATs for a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Ky’ron Craggette’s eight-yard run with 7:21 left in the third quarter tied the game at 14-14 before Willis III scored on a 75-yard touchdown catch from Black with nine seconds remaining in the third period for a 21-14 lead.
Willis III caught 8 passes for 134 yards and Black was 20 of 31 for 251 yards.
Craggette, who rushed for 84 yards on 24 carries and caught two passes for 58 yards, scored on a three-yard run with 12:12 left in the fourth period.
California welcomes undefeated Slippery Rock (6-0, 3-0 PSAC) to Adamson Stadium next Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
