Cawley takes over in Waynesburg’s victory over Bethany
Bethany had a seven-point lead with 6:12 left in the first quarter, and that’s when Waynesburg’s Zayne Cawley decided to take over.
The Yellow Jackets’ running back gained 249 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns in Waynesburg’s 34-14 Homecoming triumph over the Bison on Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
Bethany (0-6, 0-6) opened the scoring when Aaran Randolph threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Brett Phillips and Liam Gallagher made the first of two PATs for a 7-0 advantage.
Cawley scored on runs of 1, 7 and 2 yards and Drew Pinkerton made two of his four extra points for a 20-7 halftime lead.
Isaac Trout helped extend the Yellow Jackets’ advantage when he pulled in a nine-yard touchdown reception from Samuel Barber with 11:32 left in the fourth quarter.
Barber was 8 of 11 for 124 yards and didn’t throw an interception. Trout led Waynesburg (2-4, 2-4) in receiving with four catches for 60 yards.
Phillips ran for a three-yard touchdown with 8:05 left in the fourth and the Yellow Jackets’ Carson Shriver closed the scoring on a five-yard run with 3:26 remaining.
Phillips was 21 of 34 for 236 yards and an interception.
