College notebook: W&J’s DeRubbo to join Bethany Hall of Fame
Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball coach Jina DeRubbo will be one of nine enshrined in the Bethany College Hall of Fame tonight.
DeRubbo came to W&J from Bethany, where she turned the Bison program into a perennial national contender. Bethany made four NCAA Division III tournament appearances in five seasons and also qualified for the ECAC South Region Tournament in 1999.
In her seven seasons with the Bison, DeRubbo became the school’s all-time leader in victories with a record of 131-57. Bethany won five Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships under DeRubbo, who was named PAC Coach of the Year four times. In addition, five of her players went on to be named the PAC Player of the Year.
At W&J since 2004, DeRubbo has won 73 percent of her games (395-148). DeRubbo has an overall record of 526-205 during her 27-year career, earning career win No. 500 with a road victory at Waynesburg on Feb. 11, 2023. She currently ranks 18th among active head coaches in Division III in wins.
DeRubbo has compiled winning seasons in 25 of her 27 seasons as a collegiate head coach and her W&J teams have qualified for the postseason 12 times. The 2008 team won the ECAC Division III Southern Tournament championship.
In soccer
Eben McIntyre of Charleroi has helped Pitt to a top-5 national ranking and at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship.
McIntyre, a junior forward, has played in 10 games for Pitt and scored two goals. The Panthers (12-3) play their regular-season finale tonight at Syracuse.
In football
Saint Francis freshman linebacker Geno Calgaro, a Canon-McMillan graduate, was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on Oct. 21.
Calgaro tied a team-high with seven tackles (four solo) in Saint Francis’ 14-0 loss at Wagner. He helped lead a defensive unit to just 47 rushing yards allowed, which was the second time the Red Flash allowed less than 50 in a game this season. The game marked Calgaro’s first collegiate start.
The true freshman has led Saint Francis in tackles for two consecutive games after a career-high nine against Duquesne. He is fourth on the team with 37 tackles and one forced fumble.
Washington & Jefferson wide receiver Jacob Macosko was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21 following his performance in a win over 7th-ranked Grove City.
A Venetia native and Peters Township graduate, Macosko had a career-high 31 pass receptions for 160 yards against the Wolverines. Included in the totals were second-quarter touchdown grabs of seven and 14 yards that helped W&J erase a 10-point deficit.
It was the second year in a row that Macosko had at least 160 receiving yards against Grove City.
Punters usually go underappreciated but not at Cal, where Clayton Rosensteel has been a key contributor for the Vulcans, who are in first place in the PSAC’s West Division.
Rosentseel was named the PSAC West Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 7, following Cal’s win over Clarion.
A Donora native and Ringgold graduate, Rosentseel averaged 45.3 yards on three punts, including a career-long of 57 yards from deep in Vulcans territory.
For the season, Rosensteel is averaging 43.5 yards on 27 punts. He set a new career long with a 61-yarder against Seton Hill on Oct. 12.
Former Carmichaels standout Trenton Carter is the eighth-leading tackler on the Wittenberg defense.
Carter, a junior defensive back, has 18 tackles, a half-sack, one fumble recovery and a pass breakup for the Tigers, who sport a 3-3 record.
In volleyball
Saint Vincent senior setter Vivian Poach, a Washington native and Trinity graduate, was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
In a pair of Saint Vincent wins, Poach totaled a team-best 68 assists, good for an average of 11.33 per set, while she also had seven kills, 25 digs and two service aces. In the Bearcats’ 3-0 win at Mount Aloysius, she had 39 assists – one short of her career-best – while also posting three kills and 12 digs. Three days later, in the Bearcats’ 3-0 PAC victory at Bethany, Poach had 29 assists, 13 digs, four kills, one block and one ace.
In tennis
Saint Vincent senior Abby Donnelly, a McGuffey graduate, received honorable mention in both singles and doubles on the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference team that was released Wednesday.
Donnelly put together a stellar senior season in singles play to earn honorable mention All-PAC accolades for the second straight season. The veteran went 11-3 on the season, posting a 2-0 mark at No. 2 singles, a 4-1 record at No. 5 and a 5-2 record at No. 6. All 11 of her wins came via straight sets, while she earned six victories in PAC play. She closed out her four-year career with 37 singles victories.
Donnelly and teammate Lydia Lieb had a 9-2 record as a doubles team, going 4-0 at No. 2 doubles and 5-2 in the No. 3 spot. They went 4-2 against PAC competition with three wins coming by 6-0 scores. Donnelly and Lieb have played as a doubles team for four seasons, amassing a record of 29-19.
