Cawley scores 2 TDs in Waynesburg’s 1st win
LATROBE – Waynesburg University’s opportunity to earn its first victory of the season didn’t look very promising following Saint Vincent’s 91-yard scoring drive early in the first quarter, but running back Zayne Cawley had other ideas.
The junior from Huntington, Md., scored the first of his two touchdowns on an 11-yard run at 2:14 of the first quarter to tie the game and the Yellow Jackets went on to defeat the Bearcats, 21-7, Saturday in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play at Chuck Noll Field.
Cawley rushed for 149 yards on 29 carries and caught four passes for 43 yards.
Waynesburg (1-3, 1-3) forced a three-and-out on Saint Vincent’s next drive and went on a 13-play, 45-yard drive that lasted more than seven minutes and culminated when Nehemie Marc pulled in a three-yard touchdown pass from Samuel Barber for a 14-7 lead with 7:18 left in the second quarter.
Barber was 13 of 15 for 114 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Marc caught four passes for 27 yards.
The Bearcats (1-3, 1-3) drove to the Yellow Jackets two-yard line at the two-minute timeout before halftime, but Waynesburg’s defense held and forced a field-goal attempt that was wide left from 23 yards out and the visitors preserved a seven-point edge.
Carmichaels graduate Tyler Richmond pulled in a 32-yard reception late in the third quarter, and Cawley scored on a six-yard run for a 21-7 advantage at 2:02 of the third quarter, which was more than enough for the Yellow Jackets’ defense, which had two sacks, five tackles for loss and an interception.
Waynesburg was 8 for 12 on third-down conversions and played turnover-free football for the first time this season.
