Small college basketball: Presidents get 5th straight victory

Alex Acosta scored a game-high 20 points, Nathan Plotner added 18, including a key dunk in the closing minutes, and Washington & Jefferson extended its winning streak to five games with a 79-73 win at Capital in a non-conference contest Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio.
Capital (5-5) trailed 43-40 at halftime but the Crusaders went ahead at 63-62 with less than 11 minutes to play. W&J (8-2) then embarked on a pivotal 13-4 run that opened a 75-67 advantage.
Capital made one final surge and cut W&J’s lead to 75-72 with 90 seconds remaining before Plotner broke free for a dunk. Acosta followed with a layup and the Presidents went on to the win.
Quinton Burlenski had 16 points for W&J and Matthew Carte scored 10.
Capital put five players in double figures led by Dallas Tucker’s 18 points.
California 95, Shippensburg 76
Bryson Lucas and Antoine Arnett combined for 48 points, sparking California to a 95-76 victory over Shippensburg in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.
Cal (2-0, 5-4) has won four in a row.
The Vulcans shot a blistering 57 percent from the field. Lucas led Cal with a game-high 27 points along with seven rebounds and five assists. Arnett tossed in 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting. He had six assists.
Jordyn Buchanan added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Cal led 45-40 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.
Shippensburg (0-1, 1-7) was led in scoring by Michael Dickson’s 18 points.
Women’s result
California 82, Shippensburg 51
Alicia Young led four California players in double figures with 22 points and the hot-shooting Vulcans rolled to an 82-51 thumping of Shippensburg in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.
Cal (2-0, 5-6) shot 59.6 percent from the field and played some stellar defense. The Vulcans raced out to a 24-8 lead after one quarter and led 42-25 at halftime. Cal held Shippensburg (0-1, 1-7) to nine points in the fourth quarter and the Raiders did not make a three-point shot in the game, going 0-for-10.
Trinity Balog scored 14 points, Kennedy Bankett had 13 and Hope Hawkins tallied 11 for the Vulcans.
Kiara Hardy was the leading scorer for Shippensburg with 12 points.
