Small college basketball: CMU deals W&J women rare home loss

Carnegie Mellon is becoming a difficult opponent for the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball program.

For the second consecutive year, CMU dealt W&J an early season loss as Nicole Timko scored a game-high 26 points and the Tartans defeated the Presidents 78-67 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

It was only the fifth loss for W&J in their last 62 home games.

W&J (7-2) led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, but CMU’s Allie Heyer made a three-pointer to open the scoring in the second quarter and the Tartans never trailed again. CMU led 38-31 at halftime and stretched their lead to 61-44 after three quarters.

CMU (5-3) made nine three-pointers, including four by Niyati Bangalore, who came off the bench to score 14 points. Payton Baney had 13 points for CMU, which is coached by former Trinity High School girls coach Kathy McConnell-Miller.

W&J, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, shot only 37 percent for the game. Riley DeRubbo paced the Presidents with 17 points as she led four W&J players in double figures. Jaden Wan had 14 points, Marina Grado 11 and Natie Kovalchick 10.

Men’s result

Wittenberg 80, Waynesburg 55

Eddie Brown and Tyler Galluch each scored 13 points and Wittenberg wore down host Waynesburg with its depth, defeating the Yellow Jackets 80-55 in a non-conference game.

Wittenberg (8-1) utilized 18 players with 15 cracking the scoring column. Seven different Tigers made at least one three-pointer.

Wittenberg didn’t pull away until midway through the second half. After leading 35-25 at halftime, Wittenberg pushed ahead at 54-42 with 11 minutes remaining before embarking on a pivotal 11-2 run that secured the win.

Wittenberg shot 57 percent compared to Waynesburg’s 38 percent.

Waynesburg’s Jalen Goins scored a game-high 17 points and Jackson Rhodes added 15.
