PITTSBURGH – Nathan Plotner scored a career-high 33 points and the Washington & Jefferson men’s basketball team broke open a close game in the second half and pulled away for a 99-77 win over La Roche in a non-conference game Friday evening.

The Presidents (9-2) improved their winning streak to six games heading into the holiday break.

W&J led by one point at halftime and was still up by a single point, 55-54, with 15 minutes remaining. That’s when the Presidents embarked on a pivotal 15-3 run, lasting a little more than four minutes and opening up a 70-57 advantage.

Plotner, a 6-7 junior forward, made 16 of 21 shots and led five Presidents in double figures. Alex Acosta scored 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, Matthew Carte had 14 points, and Matt Seidl and Quinton Burlenski each tallied 11.

The Presidents shot 57 percent and outscored La Roche 15-6 at the free-throw line.

Major Rainey scored 23 points to pace La Roche (3-8). Bryce Epps had 17 and Logan Golle 12.

W&J does not play again until Jan. 7 at Bethany.
