W&J women edged by Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team returned from its holiday break but the Presidents’ shooting touch did not.

W&J shot only 33 percent and lost 52-43 to Otterbein on Monday afternoon.

The Presidents (7-3) trailed 27-24 at halftime but took a 33-32 lead into the final period after outscoring the Cardinals 9-5 in the third quarter. Otterbein (8-3) outscored W&J 20-10 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Otterbein trailed 40-38 before embarking on an 11-0 run that put the Cardinals in control of the game.

Abby Rawlings scored a game-high 15 points and Kiara Hudgins added 12. The Cardinals’ Cameron Sparks had 19 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end. Otterbein won despite shooting only 30 percent.

Riley DeRubbo was the lone W&J player in double figures as she tallied 11 points, including a three-pointer that gave the Presidents the 40-38 lead.

W&J will be back on the court today, playing at nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan.
