Cal men eclipse century mark in win over PSAC West leader Gannon

For the third time this season, the California Men’s basketball team went over 100 points and this time it was against the top team in the PSAC West.
Donald Whitehead Jr. had a career-high 30 points and Keondre DeShields scored 23 off the bench in a 106-84 victory for the Vulcans over Gannon Saturday.
Cal (7-7, 12-10) built a 25 point advantage in the first half on its way to a fourth consecutive win at home over the Golden Knights (11-3, 16-6).
Whitehead, Jr. hit four three-pointers and was 8 for 12 from the free throw line.
Cal opened the game on a 19-5 run at the 14:46-mark after making seven of its initial nine shot attempts and led 52-39 at halftime.
The Golden Knights trimmed the difference to 11 points three times in the opening four minutes of the second half, but Cal responded with a 16-3 rally over four minutes behind a trio of three-pointers to increase the lead to a 74-50 margin with 11:46 remaining.
Cam Polak had 20 points for the Vulcans and Kadyn Hannah scored 15.
Ernest Shelton led Gannon with 23 points.
Washington & Jefferson 91, Bethany 71
Cam Rowell came off the bench to put up a game-high 21 points to help Washington & Jefferson down Bethany in Presidents Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Nathan Plotner recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Quinton Burlenski finished with 15 points and seven assists.
The Presidents took a 35-25 lead into the half and ripped off a 10-0 run to open the second sparked by a layup from Alex Acosta and back-to-back threes from Matthew Carte and Matt Seidl.
Washington & Jefferson (11-4, 15-5) held strong advantages in points in the paint (56-34), fastbreak points (39-15) and points off turnovers (27-12).
Cole Dailey had 16 points to lead the Bison (1-12, 6-12).
Allegheny 71, Waynesburg 66
In a game that featured 11 ties and eight lead changes, Allegheny pulled away down the stretch to pick up a PAC win Saturday.
Free throw shooting woes hindered Waynesburg (7-13, 5-10) down the stretch. The Yellowjackets missed six of 12 free throws in the final eight-plus minutes.
Luke Barker made two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to seal the win for Allegheny (5-9, 7-12).
The majority of the game was played within six points.
Antone Baker set a season-high with 26 points and added 18 rebounds for Waynesburg and Jalen Goins made four three-pointers on his way to 14 points and six rebounds.
Ryan Lang led the Gators with 20 points. Barker scored 19 and James Sitter had 17 points.
Women’s Basketball
Washington & Jefferson 66, Bethany 52
The Presidents opened the game on a 16-2 run and cruised from there to improve their record in the PAC to 14-1 and 17-3 overall in a win over Bethany (7-7, 10-9) Saturday.
Washington & Jefferson put the game away with an 11-3 spurt to open the third quarter. A jumper by Adalynn Cherry and free throws by Trinity grad Riley DeRubbo extended the lead to 45-26 at the 4:47 mark.
Canon-McMillan grad Stellanie Loutsion finished with a team-best 16 points and Katie Kovalchick scored 12. The Presidents went 17 for 20 from the free throw line.
Bella Skobel poured in a game-high 24 points for the Bison. She went 10 for 13 from the foul line.
The Presidents limited the Bison to 2-of-23 from three-point range and forced 22 turnovers. They are 11-0 at home this year.
Gannon 61, California 56
California led for the majority of the game, but saw it slip away late to Gannon Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights (12-2, 20-3) closed the game on an 11-1 run and won the fourth quarter 18-12.
Three different starters for the Vulcans (7-7, 11-10) fouled out over the final minutes. The Vulcans (11-10, 7-7) have lost the last five meetings at home versus the Golden Knights, including three by five points or less.
Cal got off to a strong start using an 11-2 run to build a 19-8 lead and led by three at halftime.
Alicia Young led the team in scoring with 17 points, Talia Gilliard scored 12 and Iyahnna Williams had 10.
Bri Claxon and Kate Ratliff registered 18 points apiece for Gannon.
Allegheny 87, Waynesburg 78
A slow start proved too much to overcome for Waynesburg in a loss at Allegheny in PAC play Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (5-10, 10-10) fell behind by 24 points in the first half and Allegheny (12-2, 13-6) started the game on a 20-6 run.
They were down 52-33 at halftime, before clawing back to get within 10 points a couple times in the second half.
Emily Lauer had a game-high 27 points for the Gators. Sofia Genareo scored 17 and Jess Bickart had 15 points. Genareo and Bickart connected on four three-pointers each.
Waynesburg had four players in double figures led by Kalista Friday’s 18 points. Julz Morhbacher scored 16, Tori Wesolowski contributed 14 points and Mia Henkins had 12. Henkins hit a trio of three’s.
