College basketball: Cal women complete sweep of IUP

Iyahnna Williams scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the pivotal third quarter, and added four clutch free throws down the stretch, as California overcame a halftime deficit and defeated Indiana 69-62 in a PSAC West game Wednesday.
California continued its strong play in the season’s second half. The Vulcans have won five in a row and improved their record to 12-7 in the conference and 16-10 overall. IUP slips to 14-5, 19-6. The Vulcans swept the regular-season series against IUP.
The Crimson Hawks led 31-25 at halftime as Cal shot only 23 percent in the half. Williams, however, jump-started Cal’s comeback with her big third quarter. The Vulcans outscored IUP 25-15 to take a four-point lead.
Cal continued to add to the lead in the fourth quarter before IUP made a late charge and closed to within 63-58 with 1:38 remaining. Williams made two free throws before IUP trimmed the gap to 65-62. Williams again made two free throws, with 20 seconds left, to give the Vulcans a five-point edge.
Talia Gilliard and Allycia Harris each scored 11 points for Cal.
Nyshae Weaver had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Crimson Hawks.

Indiana 84, California 76
Kyman Marrero scored a game-high 26 points and Indiana used a late charge to beat California 84-76 in a PSAC West contest.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak by Cal (11-8, 16-11). IUP improves to 8-11 in the PSAC and 13-14 overall.
The Vulcans led 71-68 with less than three minutes remaining but IUP finished strong. The Crimson Hawks made eight of their final 10 shots and converted 15 of 17 free throws in the second half.
IUP moved ahead with an 8-0 run that made it 76-71. The Vulcans trimmed the gap to 76-74 when Jordyn Buchanan made three free throws, but Cal would not score again.
Buchanan led the Vulcans with 24 points. Cam Polak had 22 and Dalman Alexander netted 11 before fouling out.
