College basketball roundup: Baker’s 1,000th helps Jackets win in OT

Antone Baker scored 18 points, including his 1,000th career point, P.J. Suggs had 17 and Casey Keesee scored six of his seven in overtime as Waynesburg outlasted visiting Franciscan 76-71 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Wednesday afternoon.
Waynesburg (4-4, 6-7) led by as many as 15 points in the second half before a late charge by Franciscan netted the Barons a 66-64 lead on a jumper by Sawyer Butler with 59 seconds left in regulation. A basket by Waynesburg’s Jason Goins tied it with 33 seconds remaining.
Baker’s basket 54 seconds into overtime gave Waynesburg the lead and the Yellow Jackets never trailed again as Keesee made six free throws down the stretch.
Josh Zimmerman scored a game-high 21 points for Franciscan (3-5, 8-5) and Butler added 18.
California 94, Slippery Rock 63
The injury-riddled California basketball team put together perhaps its best performance of the season in a 94-63 thumping of visiting Slippery Rock in a PSAC West game.
The Vulcans (3-5, 8-8) played a terrific first half and led Slippery Rock (6-3, 9-7) by a hopping 57-17 margin at halftime.
Cam Polak and Donald Whitehead each scored 27 points to lead the Vulcans. Keondre DeShields came off the bench to score 11.
The Vulcans hammered The Rock on the boards (52-36) and shot 50 percent from the field.
Washington & Jefferson 77, Thiel 59
South Fayette grad Michael Plasko came off the bench for Washington & Jefferson to score a game-high 16 points in a 77-59 victory over Thiel in PAC play.
Plasko was 6-for-7 from the field for the Presidents, who shot 56.9 percent as a team.
Alex Acosta and Nathan Plotner added 13 points each for Washington & Jefferson (6-3, 10-4)
Matt Seidl finished with 11 points and Matthew Carte scored 10.
Thiel (4-5, 5-8) only shot 34.7% from the field and had 17 turnovers.
Mike Brown led the Tomcats with 13 points and Marlon Ellerbee scored 12.
Women’s results
Wash & Jeff 78, Thiel 32
Hannah Archer led 15 Washington & Jefferson players in the scoring column with 11 points and the Presidents rolled over visiting Thiel 78-32 in a PAC game.
The Presidents (9-0, 12-2) dominated from the outset against the winless Tomcats (0-8, 0-13), leading 29-10 at halftime and 58-14 after three quarters.
Katie Kovalchick was the only other W&J player in double figures with 10 points to go with five steals. Meghan Dryburgh grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Thiel made only four of its first 36 shots and was 0-for-11 from three-point range on the night.
California 62, Slippery Rock 59
Nina Shaw made a tiebreaking basket with two minutes remaining and California held on down the stretch to beat Slippery Rock 62-59 in a PSAC West game.
Shaw’s basket gave Cal a 59-57 lead and a layup by Allycia Young made it a two-possession game. The Rock never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
Iyahnna Williams and Talia Gilliard each scored 16 points for Cal (4-4, 7-7). Harris finished with 10 points.
Slippery Rock’s Tahmala Thorpe scored a game-high 18 points.
Waynesburg 84, Franciscan 63
Kara McFadden had 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds, leading Waynesburg to an 84-63 victory over Franciscan in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (2-6, 7-6) made 12 three-point field goals compared to Franciscan’s 1-for-17 shooting from behind the arc. The Yellow Jackets led 42-23 at halftime.
Clara Paige-Miller matched McFadden with 13 points and Kalista Friday netted 10. Tori Wesolowski scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Caroline Reedy scored a game-high 15 points for Franciscan (1-7, 1-12).
