Small college basketball: Polak, Vulcans shoot down Clarion

Cam Polak scored a game-high 35 points and made eight of California’s 14 three-point field goals as the Vulcans rolled to a 90-74 victory over Clarion in a PSAC West men’s basketball game Wednesday at the Convocation Center.
The win is the third straight for Cal (5-5, 10-8).
Donald Whitehead added 23 points and eight assists for the Vulcans, who took a 20-point lead into halftime.
Cam Kearney paced Clarion (3-7, 8-8) with 30 points. Gavin Cote, a Peters Township graduate, had 22 that included six three-pointers.
Wash & Jeff 103, Franciscan 85
Matthew Carte scored career-high 30 points as Washington & Jefferson defeated Franciscan 103-85 in a PAC game.
The Presidents improve their overall record to 12-4 with an 8-3 mark in league play. W&J is also riding a three-game win streak into their bye this weekend.
Carte showcased his long-range touch again with six three-point field goals in seven attempts. Supplementing the offense was Nathan Plotner with 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting. Alex Acosta added 13 points, and Cameron Rowell and Matt Seidl each had 11.
Grove City 67, Waynesburg 55
Chase Yarberough scored 23 points, Mike Christenson added 17 and Grove City stayed at the top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings with a 67-55 win Wednesday night at Waynesburg.
The Wolverines improved to 9-1 in the PAC and 12-3 overall. They have won seven in a row.
Waynesburg slipped to 4-6, 6-9.
Groove City led by nine points at halftime and Waynesburg was unable to fuel enough offense in the second half to mount a comeback. The Yellow jackets went 0-for-11 from three-point range in the second half and 2-for-18 in the game.
Antone Baker led Waynesburg with 18 points. Casey Keesee had 11 points and PJ Suggs 10.
Women’s results
Waynesburg 70, Grove City 61
Tori Wesolowski led five Waynesburg players in double figures with 12 points and the Yellow Jackets pulled away down the stretch to beat visiting Grove City 70-61 in a PAC game.
The game was close throughout. The score was tied 19-19 after one quarter and 31-31 at halftime. Grove City (6-4, 8-7) led 46-44 after three quarters. The largest lead was only six points until the final minute. Waynesburg’s Clara Paige Miller made two key free throws with 27 seconds remaining to put the Yellow Jackets (3-7, 8-7) up 66-61. Miller scored 11 points, nine coming on free throws.
Mia Henkins also had 11 points for the winners, Macie Justice dropped in 10 and Kalista Friday had 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Wash & Jeff 92, Franciscan 51
Katie Kovalchick scored 19 points, leading PAC leader Washington & Jefferson to an easy 92-51 win over visiting Franciscan.
W&J (11-0, 14-2) had 14 players crack the scoring column. Bryn Bezjak had 13 points, and Stellanie Loutsion and Jordyn Wolfe each tossed in 10. Meghan Dryburgh grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Presidents shot 51 percent from the field for the game and took control from the start, mounting a 19-2 lead.
Franciscan is 1-9, 1-14.
California 85, Clarion 74
Talia Gilliard and Iyahnna Williams combined for 48 points, sparking California to a 85-74 win over Clarion in the PSAC West.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score suggests as Cal (5-5, 8-8) led 35-10 after one quarter, 48-25 at halftime and 76-45 at the end of three quarters.
Gilliard scored a game-high 26 points and Williams followed with 22 on 10-for-14 shooting. Sierra Bermudez chipped in with 11 points and Alicia Young had 10.
Clarion (5-5, 11-6), which committed 32 turnovers, received 22 points from Autumn Taylor.
