W&J Women get back on track, cruise past Westminster

The Washington and Jefferson women’s basketball team put its first Presidents Athletic Conference loss in the rearview mirror with a 85-55 blowout victory over Westminster Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents (12-1, 15-3) dropped a 67-62 decision at Chatham on Wednesday, but were never in danger in Saturday’s contest against Westminster.

They remain in first place in the PAC standings.

Washington & Jefferson built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and put the game to bed in the third by outscoring the Titans, 30-7.

Five Presidents reached double figures in scoring led by Canon-McMillan grad Stellanie Loutsion, who scored 16 points and dished out five assists.

Katie Kovalchick and Raegan Kadlecik each finished with 12 points. Bryn Bezjak and Trinity grad Riley DeRubbo contributed 10 points apiece.

Washington & Jefferson finished with advantages in points off turnovers (18-5), bench points (38-24), second chance points (14-6) and fast break points (17-5). They outrebounded the Titans by a 46-22 margin.

Grace Cano led the Titans with 15 points.

Waynesburg 83, Geneva 71

Waynesburg used hot shooting from beyond the arc, a good day at the free throw line and a strong outing from its bench players to put away Geneva and earn a win in PAC play on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets (5-8, 10-8) trailed the Golden Tornadoes (6-6, 9-8) by two points with just under seven minutes to play, but shot 8-for-10 from the foul line and outscored Geneva, 14-2, over the final five minutes of play.

Kalista Friday, Kara McFadden and Trinity grad Macie Justice sank a trio of three-pointers each. Waynesburg went 28-for-37 at the foul line. The Yellowjackets’ bench outscored Geneva’s, 34-12.

Friday paced the Yellowjackets with 20 points. McFadden added 15 points. Julz Mohrbacher made 12 free throws and finished with 14 points. Justice scored a career-high 13 points and Canon-McMillan grad Tori Wesolowski recorded 10 points.

Geneva’s Emily Garvin had a double-double with 33 points and 15 rebounds. She made 16 free throws.

Edinboro 80, California 79

Hayley Sims hit a go-ahead layup with 21 seconds remaining and Edinboro held on from there to beat visiting California Saturday afternoon in a PSAC West game.

Iyahnna Williams made a shot to put Cal ahead 79-78 with 43 seconds left, before Sims’ game winner.

On Cal’s final possession, Williams took a step-back jumper 5.5 seconds that came off the front of the rim and time ran out during the scramble for the rebound, securing the 100th win for Edinboro coach Callie Wheeler.

Cal (6-6, 10-9) led 40-35 at the half and extended that lead to 48-41 on a Williams layup with 6:08 on the clock in the third.

The Scots (10-2, 15-4) responded with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to one and it went back and forth from there. Neither team led by more than six points the rest of the way.

Rachel Manfredo paced the Scots with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Morgan Gentile tallied 18 points and eight assists. Ava Haddad added 17 points and Sims scored 13 Allycia Harris led the Vulcans with 18 points. Alicia Young added 16 while Talia Gilliard and Williams notched 13 apiece.

Men’s Basketball

Washington & Jefferson 88, Westminster 79

Washington & Jefferson came out on fire in the second half, scoring a dozen consecutive points to build a double-digit lead and didn’t look back, earning a PAC victory Saturday at Westminster.

After the 12-point burst, which improved the Presidents’ lead to 49-35, Westminster did not get within eight points the rest of the way.

The win completed a season sweep for the Presidents (9-4, 13-5) over the Titans (1-11, 4-13). They won the first meeting 69-67 on Nov. 23

Four players finished with double figures for the Presidents led by Matt Seidl, who tallied 22 points. It was his second consecutive game of 20 or more points. Sophomore Cameron Rowell added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. South Fayette grad Michael Plasko tacked on 16 points and Matthew Carte scored 11.

Noah Plotner finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.

Drew Weir had a game-high 24 points for Westminster.

Geneva 64, Waynesburg 63

Ryan Rachic sank a long baseline jumper with two seconds remaining to deliver Geneva a 64-63 comeback victory over Waynesburg Saturday in PAC play.

After a foul, Geneva inbounded under the basket and Rachic sank a well-contested fall away jumper in the left corner. After a Waynesburg timeout, Korey Mitchum’s heave missed the mark as time expired.

Waynesburg (5-8, 7-11) had a 63-56 lead with just over two minutes remaining, but the Golden Tornadoes (6-6, 8-9) finished the contest on a 8-0 run.

Nick Million drained back-to-back three-pointers for Geneva to trim Waynesburg’s lead to 63-62 with 43 seconds left.

Prior to the comeback, Waynesburg had a 13-2 run in which Antone Baker made three shots and hit a pair of free throws.

Baker finished with 19 points and Mitchum had a season-high 17 points.

Rachic scored 21 for Geneva and Trevor Tipton finished with 19 points.

Edinboro 93, California 85

California had an eight-game winning streak snapped against Edinboro and lost its first road game against the Fighting Scots since 2018 in a PSAC West game Saturday.

The Scots had two major keys that helped them secure the win. They held a plus-21 advantage in rebounding and scored 24 second chance points.

Edinboro also shot 35 free throws compared to Cal’s six. Cal made all six and Edinboro sank 27 of its attempts.

Donald Whitehead Jr. and Cam Polak scored 21 points each for the Vulcans (5-7, 10-10). Keondre DeShields added 12 points off the bench.

Steve Kelly had a game-high 24 points for Edinboro and Cenker Ervan scored 21, including going 9 of 10 from the free throw line.
