College basketball: Presidents fight off Grove City

Matt Seidl scored a game-high 15 points, including a key layup with 34 seconds remaining as Washington & Jefferson defeated visiting Grove City in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Wednesday night at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Seidl made a driving layup that gave W&J a 54-51 lead. He added a free throw with eight seconds to play that sealed the win for the Presidents (10-4, 14-5).
W&J’s Michael Plasko scored seven of his 11 points in the first half as the Presidents forged a 30-28 halftime lead.
Chase Yarberough, with 10 points, was the only Grove City player to score in double figures. The Wolverines are 10-4 in conference, 13-6 overall.
California 76, Indiana 74
Cam Polak scopred a game-high 25 points, including two free throws with seven seconds remaining, giving California a 76-74 win over Indiana in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.
Polak’s two free throws gave Cal (7-6, 11-9) a four-point lead and cut short a late comeback by IUP (6-7, 10-10).
Jordyn Buchanan scored 18 points for the Vulcans, Donald Whitehead added 12, including a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining, and Keondre DeShields came off the bench to add 12.
Christian Moore led IUP with 24 points
Chatham 82, Waynesburg 74
Lovenson Xavier scored 33 points and Chatham used a key run in the middle of the second half to pull away for an 82-74 victory over host Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Waynesburg (5-9, 7-12) led 34-30 at halftime and 42-41 midway through the second half. That’s when Chatham (13-1, 16-3), the first-place team in the PAC, embarked on a 15-6 run and never trailed again. The Cougars won their eighth straight.
Chatham’s Diaun Pinkett scored 20 points and Simon Boyer had 18.
Antone Baker led Waynesburg with 15 points and 10 rebounds but he was held to four points in the second half. PJ Suggs had 12 points and Jaylin Davis 11.
Waynesburg made five more field goals (32-27) than Chatham but the Cougars were 23-for-34 at the free-throw line compared to the Yellow Jackets’ 5-for-6.
Women’s results
California 77, Indiana 63
Iyahnna Williams and Talia Gilliard combined for 38 points as California picked up one of its best wins of the season, defeating Indiana 77-63 in a PSAC West game.
Williams led the Vulcans (7-6, 11-9) by scoring 20 points to go with seven assists, and Gilliard followed with 18. Williams scored 12 of her points in the first half, when Cal shot a blistering 55 percent from the field. The Vulcans made 11 of their first 15 shots and led 40-32 at halftime.
The only time Cal trailed was at 2-0.
Alicia Young tossed in 12 points for the Vulcans and Sierra Bermudez added 11.
IUP (10-3, 15-4) received a game-high 24 points from Shamia Strayhorn.
Wash & Jeff 65, Grove City 44
Katie Kovalchick and Stellanie Loutsion each scored 13 points and PAC-leading Washington & Jefferson rolled to a 65-44 victory over Grove City.
The Presidents improve to 13-1 in the conference and 16-3 overall. Grove City is 9-5, 11-8.
W&J never trailed in the game and led 37-27 at halftime. The Presidents held the Wolverines to six points in the fourth quarter.
The Presidents hammered Grove City on the broad, holding a 56-36 advantage as Meghan Dryburgh grabbed 23 rebounds.
Bryn Bezjak tossed in 12 points for W&J. Grove City did not have a player score in double figures.
Chatham 84, Waynesburg 59
Ashlie Louden scored 24 points and Chatham used a 51-point second half to pull away for an 84-59 win at Waynesburg in a PAC game.
Chatham (11-3, 13-5) had a good start to each half, building a 21-9 lead at the end of one quarter and outscoring the Yellow Jackets 25-16 in the third quarter.
Kalista Friday and Macie Justice each scored 12 points for Waynesburg (5-9, 10-9). Justice’s points came on four three-point field goals. Friday also had five assists. Tori Wesolowski scored 11 points.
