Small college roundup: Rhodes leads Yellow Jackets to opening win

Jackson Rhodes, a native of New Zealand who missed all of last season because of an ankle injury, scored a game-high 23 points Friday night, powering Waynesburg to a 75-69 victory over host Hilbert in the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament.

Mikey Smith added 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Waynesburg, which led 43-42 at halftime. Grant Barnhart chipped in with 11 points and made two key free throws with eight seconds remaining that sealed the win for the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg took the lead for good at 67-66 on a jump shot by Jalen Goins with 3:32 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets shot 49 percent from the field and made nine of 17 three-point attempts.

Larry Morse scored 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting to lead Hilbert.

Women’s results

Northern Michigan 66, California 57

Jacy Weisbrod and Sydney Whitehouse each scored 18 points and Northern Michigan rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat California 66-57 in the season-opening D2 Tip-Off Classic at Edinboro.

California led 30-22 at halftime, but the Vulcans were outscored 22-11 in the pivotal third quarter and Northern Michigan secured the win with a 22-point fourth quarter.

Alicia Young, the only returning starter from last season, scored a game-high 20 points to pace California’s attack. Kennedy Bankett was the only other Cal player to score in double figures. She finished with 10 points.

The Vulcans led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter and took the eight-point lead into halftime. Northern Michigan made 10 of 14 shots in the third quarter and took the lead for good midway through the period.
