CALIFORNIA — They appeared to be the same players but Cal’s football team played anything but the style of football that produced a 45-38 stunning victory over arch-rival and previous undefeated Slippery Rock last week.
Talent-wise, Seton Hill is not Slippery Rock but the Griffins played a similar game and came away with a 16-7 victory over No. 6 Cal in a PSAC West game. This was the first time Seton Hill has defeated California. The Vulcans had won the previous 12 meetings.
Cal is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Seton Hill moved to 3-3 and 1-1.
The big play came with 2:22 remaining to play on a 46-yard touchdown run by Ky’Ron Craggette, the brother of Cal running back Da’Sjon Craggette.
“We didn’t execute and we didn’t play well and that’s on me,” said Cal head coach Gary Dunn. “We had opportunities. When you don’t take advantage of their mistakes, it’s hard to win games.”
Kendrick Agenor, who took the place of the injured Bobby Boyd, led Cal with 73 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Roman Purcell completed 8 of 16 for 85 yards. He was replaced in the fourth quarter by Phaeton Hill, who completed 7 of 11 passes for 90 yards.
“We did a good job against their Running back but their quarterback went for 100,” said Dunn. “We didn’t have them ready to play and that’s on me.”
Ky’Ron Craggette, Seton Hill’s tailback, rushed for 155 yards on 27 carries and quarterback Damian Carter gained 97 on 15.
The two teams struggled throughout the first half to score. Cal held a 7-6 lead thanks to a missed extra point attempt but Seton Hill had to feel good about the way it played in the first 30 minutes.
The Griffins took a 6-0 lead when Carter bulled over from 1 yard with 3:00 left in the half.
Agoner started out with a strong carry on his first offensive play of the game. But it was the ending part, where he fumbled the football to Seton Hill that showed what type of game this. The Griffins had problems of their own, having a 22-yard field goal blocked in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Purcell had his choice of two wide open receivers and was intercepted near the end of the first quarter. Purcell and Carter were a combined 10 of 25 for 124 yards at the half.
A fumble by Seton Hill set Cal up for its first score. Purcell lofted a 16-yard pass to Agoner and Harry Radcliffe nailed the extra point to give Cal a 7-6 halite lead.
“It feels great,” said Seton Hill head coach Mike May. “Defense was the key to this win.”
