Waynesburg holds on for win after lengthy weather delay
WAYNESBURG – What started as a 1 p.m. kick off turned into a primetime affair thanks to a lightning delay at Waynesburg’s John F. Wiley Stadium Saturday.
And after a marathon affair the Yellow Jackets got into the win column for the first time this season, outlasting Hiram, 35-27, in the Presidents Athletic Conference opener.
Hiram (0-1, 1-2) had a chance to tie late, but Marcus Crum Jr. intercepted a pass near the goal line to preserve the win. Crum had a pair of interceptions in the game.
Waynesburg (1-0, 1-2) led Hiram 21-14 at halftime and the teams stayed in the locker room for about four hours waiting out a weather delay.
When play resumed at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Yellow Jackets built on their lead.
Zayne Cawley scored from 6-yards out at the 9:43 mark of the third quarter to make it 28-14. It was Cawley’s third touchdown of the day. He finished with 230 yards rushing.
Luke Hudson, making his first start at quarterback for the Yellowjackets, threw a pair of touchdown passes including a 15-yard strike to Elija Jackson that made it 35-14 in the third quarter.
Hudson was 17 of 19 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Carmichaels grad Tyler Richmond on a 28-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
The Terriers scored on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter to cut it to a one-score game, but the Yellow Jackets held on to win their first PAC opener since 2022.
