College basketball roundup: W&J loss creates logjam atop PAC South

Camden Bashor made a game-tying basket with two seconds left in regulation and a go-ahead jump shot with 25 seconds to play in overtime that sent Saint Vincent to a 77-74 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.

The result created a logjam at the top of the PAC’s South Division. W&J (11-2, 16-6) entered the night in first place and one-game ahead of Saint Vincent (11-2, 16-6) and Bethany.

W&J led 37-35 at halftime and 53-49 at the end of three quarters. The Presidents led 65-62 after Stellanie Loutsion made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Bashor made a jumper that cut the gap to a single point, and W&J’s Marina Grado made one of two free throws with eight seconds left that gave W&J a 66-64 advantage.

Another basket by Bashor sent the game to overtime tied at 66-66. Saint Vincent went ahead for good at 76-74 on a Bashor jumper with 25 seconds remaining in the extra session. The Bearcats’ Olivia Yancy made one of two free throws with nine seconds left to make it a three-point game.

W&J missed a desperation three-pointer on the game’s final possession.

Brooke Evans had a double-double of 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Saint Vincent. Bashor finished with 14 points.

Katie Kovalchick had a big night for W&J, scoring a game-high 30 points to go with seven rebounds. The Presidents were hurt when Riley DeRubbo fouled out in regulation. She left with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Waynesburg 82, Bethany 71

Kara McFadden and Kalista Friday combined for 42 points and 14 assists, and Waynesburg outscored Bethany 30-13 in the fourth quarter to complete a comeback and beat the Bison 82-71 in a PAC South Division game.

Bethany (10-3, 15-7) missed an opportunity to move into a three-way tie for first place in the division and had its nine-game winning streak snapped. Waynesburg (8-5, 12-10) extended its winning streak to six games.

Bethany led 58-52 after three quarters, but Waynesburg put together an 18-1 run in the fourth quarter that forged a commanding 72-61 advantage.

McFadden scored a team-high 23 points to go with five assists. She made five of Waynesburg’s 12 three-point field goals. Friday finished with 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Mia Henkins and Liv Ammons each netted 10 points to give Waynesburg four players in double figures.

Bethany’s Lindsey Garrison poured in a game-high 32 points.

Seton Hill 111, Seton Hill 87

Shaye Bailey scored 21 points, Helen Cowan had 20 and Seton Hill rolled to a 111-87 victory over California in a PSAC West game played in Greensburg.

Seton Hill (12-3, 16-5) scored 56 points in the first half, 55 in the second half and made a whopping 50 field goals.

Mia Kalich added 19 points for Seton Hill, Hallie Cowan had 17 and Hailee Ford scored 14.

Cal (6-9, 10-15) had four players score in double figures led Kennedy Bankett’s 24 points. Hope Hawkins followed with 18 points, Mya Morgan had 14 and Macy Sardone tossed in 13.

Men’s results

California 83, Seton Hill 48

Keondre DeShields pumped in a game-high 26 points, powering California to an 83-48 win at Seton Hill in a PSAC West game.

Cal (13-2, 16-6) was in control from the start and led 38-27 at halftime. The Vulcans led by as many as 37 points in the second half.

Cal shot 55 percent and made nine three-pointers.

Jordyn Buchanan scored 18 points, Bryson Lucas had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Dalman Alexander chipped in with 10 points for the Vulcans.

Seton Hill (7-8, 13-10) had only one player in double figures, Dean Simos with 11 points.

Saint Vincent 75, Washington & Jefferson 65

Mike Iuzzolino scored 16 points, including a go-ahead basket late in the game that sparked Saint Vincent to a 75-66 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a key PAC South Division game.

The win moves Saint Vincent (10-3, 15-7) ahead of W&J (9-4, 16-6) in the standings. The Bearcats have won eight in a row.

W&J led 34-31 at halftime and by 10 points (45-35) with 13:54 remaining.

Saint Vincent chipped away at the deficit and moved ahead at 64-62 on an Iuzzolino three-pointer with 3:34 left to play. The Bearcats pulled away down the stretch.

Saint Vincent’s Dev Ostrowski scored 15 points and Jaden Payne had 14.

Nathan Plotner had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead W&J. Matt Seidl added 11 points, and Quinton Burlenski and Michael Plasko each netted 10.

Bethany 105, Waynesburg 69

Co Rose scored 24 points, leading five Bethany players in double figures as the Bison rolled over visiting Waynesburg 105-69 in a PAC South game.

Bethany (6-7, 10-12) led 47-32 at halftime and then scored 58 points in the second half. The Bison shot 54 percent and made 15 of 34 three-point field goals. Bethany led by as many as 41 points in the second half.

Waynesburg (3-10, 7-15) was led in scoring by Casey Keesee and Aiden Blake, each tossing in 14 points. Jalen Goins had 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who were outrebounded 49-35.
