College basketball: Balanced effort wins for Presidents
Washington & Jefferson’s men’s basketball team had six players score in double figures, led by Matt Seidl’s 19 points, as it rolled to a 99-82 victory over host Bethany in a key Presidents’ Athletic Conference South Division game Wednesday evening.
The Presidents shot 51 percent from the field, made 7 of 14 three-point attempts and converted 24 of 28 free throws. The sharp-shooting allowed W&J to forge a commanding 53-33 halftime lead and cruise the rest of the way.
Matthew Carte scored 17 points and six assists in W&J’s balanced attack, Alex Acosta had 14 points, Michael Plasko scored all of his 13 in the first half, Quinton Burlenski netted 12 and Nathan Plotner had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Co Rose scored a game-high 23 points for Bethany (6-9, 10-14).
California 84, Pitt-Johnstown 80
Bryson Lucas scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, helping California to an 84-80 road win over Pitt-Johnstown in a PSAC West game.
California improved to 15-2 in the conference and 18-6 overall. UPJ dropped to 5-12, 11-14. The Mountain Cats have lost five in a row.
Antoine Arnett scored 18 points for the Vulcans, who led 43-38 at halftime. Jayden Buchanan had 10 points.
Chatham 85, Waynesburg 69
Diaun Pinkett scored 26 points, sparking Chatham to an 85-69 victory over host Waynesburg in a PAC South Division game.
Chatham (11-4, 16-7) took control early and led 38-25 with 5:45 left in the first half. Waynesburg (3-12, 7-17) closed to within 46-39 at halftime, but the Cougars pulled away in the second half.
Drew Vizenor scored 16 points and Lovenson Xavier added 15 for Chatham, which shot 53 percent and made 11 three-pointers.
Jackson Rhodes led four Waynesburg players in double figures with 18 points. Casey Keesee followed with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Jalen Goins and Scott Bilovis each had 10 points. The Yellow Jackets also made 11 three-pointers.
Women’s results
Washington & Jefferson 83, Bethany 74
Riley DeRubbo scored 24 points, Katie Kovalchick added 20 and nine rebounds and Washington & Jefferson won at Bethany 83-74 in a PAC South Division game.
DeRubbo went 10-for-10 at the free-throw as the Presidents converted 22 of 24 chances at the stripe. W&J made 11 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter as they protected the lead.
Marina Grado scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Stellanie Loutsion had 10 for the Presidents, who are 13-2 in the conference and 18-6 overall. The win keeps W&J’s division title hopes alive.
Lindsey Garrison scored 20 points and Addy Blazer had 18 for Bethany (10-5, 15-9).
Chatham 60, Waynesburg 51
Hannah Chenault scored 14 points and Chatham picked up its second single-digit win over Waynesburg this season, beating the Yellow Jackets 60-51 in a PAC South Division game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Chatham (10-5, 17-6) won the game with a strong first half that ended with the Cougars leading 42-30.
Chenault led three Chatham players in double figures. Madison Nereu scored 13 of her points in the first half. Maria Barela had 12.
No Waynesburg (8-7, 13-11) player scored in double figures. Kalista Friday and Kara McFadden each netted nine points.
Pitt-Johnstown 73, California 57
This has been a down season by California’s lofty standards, and the Vulcans had another agonizing result Wednesday.
Camille Dominick led five Pitt-Johnstown players in double figures with 15 points as UPJ defeated visiting California 73-57 in a PSAC West game.
Cal (7-10, 11-16) trailed 37-33 at halftime and was held to 24 points in the second half.
UPJ (6-11, 9-15) shot 52 percent and committed only 10 turnovers.
Cal’s Hope Hawkins scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the first half. Trinity Balog had 13 points and Kimaya Williams scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
