W&J women move on in PAC tournament
Stellanie Loutsion scored 21 points, Riley DeRubbo added 20 and the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team easily advanced in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament with an 80-55 home-court victory over Geneva in a first-round game played Wednesday night.
W&J (20-6) moves into Thursday night’s semifinals and will play Bethany, a 65-55 winner over Allegheny. The game will be played at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The Presidents went wire-to-wire, never trailing against Geneva (10-16). W&J led 24-15 after one quarter and 47-36 at halftime. Geneva scored the first basket of the second half to get back to within single-digits, but W&J pulled away from that point. The Presidents outscored Geneva 20-10 in the third quarter for a 67-46 lead.
W&J shot a blistering 55 percent in the first half and 56 percent through three quarters. The Presidents also made 78 percent of their free throws in the game.
Geneva shot only 29 percent.
Loutsion finished with a double-double as she grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. DeRubbo made 6 of 10 shots including four three-point field goals. She scored 13 of her points in the first half.
Katie Kovalchick had a big first quarter and gave W&J three players in double figures as she finished with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
Emily Garvin scored 19 points for Geneva but had only five in the second half. Aizlyn Thompson had 12 points.
The W&J men’s team also played Geneva in the opening round of the PAC tournament. That game did not end in time to be included in this edition.
