Cal women upset 5th-ranked Indiana

Hope Hawkins scored 23 points, Kennedy Bankett added 22 and the California women’s basketball team upset fifth-ranked Indiana 74-69 in a key PSAC West Division game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The loss was only the second all season for IUP (17-2, 23-2). The Crimson Hawks, whose only prior loss was to Clarion, had their seven-game winning streak snapped.
California improves to 8-11, 12-17.
California led 35-33 at halftime and took control in the third quarter, building a double-digit lead before taking a 55-47 advantage into the final period.
IUP rallied and closed to within 68-67 before Hawkins banked in an eight-footer from the lane that gave the Vulcans a three-point edge with 39 seconds remaining.
The Vulcans made four free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Hawkins, who made 11 of 19 shots, had a double-double with 12 rebounds. Jalasia Hull came off the bench and scored 12 points for Cal and Kimaya Williams had 10, including a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left.
Nyshae’ Weaver led four IUP players in double figures with 17 points. Terese Maggio had 16 points.
Men’s results
California 78, Indiana 60
Dalman Alexander scored 19 points, Btyson Lucas and Jordan Buchanan both had 18 and California defeated 24th-ranked Indiana 78-60 in a PSAC West game.
The Vulcans (16-3, 19-7) swept IUP in the regular-season series. The Crimson Hawks fell to 14-4, 20-5.
California led 36-28 at halftime and pulled away in the second half by shooting 65 percent after intermission, which included 5-for-7 from three-point range.
Lucas had a double-double. He grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and blocked three shots.
IUP’s Dallis Dillard scored a game-high 23 points.
Washington & Jefferson 85, Geneva 59
Washington & Jefferson won its Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal matchup against visiting Geneva, 85-59, Tuesday night.
The win sends W&J (20-6) to its fourth PAC tournament semifinal in five years. The victory also gave the Presidents its 20th win, making it the sixth time in school history the team has reached the 20-win mark, including four times in the past five seasons.
Alex Acosta led the Presidents with 16 points, with eight coming on his nine free-throw attempts. Cameron Rowell followed Acosta in the scoring column with 15 points. Matt Seidl and Quinton Burlenski rounded out the W&J double-digit scorers with 10 points each.
W&J will play Franciscan in the semifinals Thursday (8 p.m.) at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. Franciscan advanced by defeating Allegheny in the opening round.
